Wolverhampton is officially the most gardener-friendly city in the UK for those wishing to rent, new research has revealed.

The study, conducted by UK-based insurance broker Towergate Insurance, analysed 25 major UK cities against 4 various criteria points to determine the most garden and ‘green fingered-friendly’ locations for renters and their shovels.

The factors included analysis of rental properties with gardens, balcony’s or terraces, the numbers of local allotments, garden centres and parks or fields per 100,000 people in the populations.

Fields and parks protected by Fields in Trust, a charity that protects parks and green spaces, were included as a ranking factor for those who don’t have gardens or access to allotments.

Overall, the top ten most ‘gardener friendly’ cities:

Wolverhampton performed well across all 4 categories, laying claim to the top spot in the UK overall. The midlands city performed especially well for the number of garden centres and fields or parks per 100,000 people, with 29 and 28 respectively.

Newport and Manchester made up the rest of the top 3 ‘gardener friendly’ major cities in the UK for renters, coming in second and third place respectively in the overall index ranking. Derby and Coventry followed close behind, ranking at fourth and fifth respectively, while Liverpool, Swansea and Glasgow made up the bottom three.

When broken down into winners per category, the research revealed that London performs best on the percentage of rental properties on the market with a garden, balcony or terrace, with 67% of listings including one of these.

They were closely followed by Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent with 63% and 59% respectively, meanwhile, Preston came bottom of that ranking with just 21% of their listed homes offering that outdoor open space.
