Morrisons unveils Bhaji Burger after selling 15 million onion bhajis last year

Morrisons is launching a new vegetarian burger – The Bhaji Burger – to give customers their Indian fix.

The new menu addition includes a bhaji burger served with zingy mango chutney in a bread roll, along with lettuce, tomato, onion rings, coleslaw and chips. The whole dish costs just £5.

The onion bhaji is one of the most popular Indian dishes in the UK. Morrisons customers love them – buying over 15 million every year.

The new burger filling is made the traditional way. Spiced cauliflower has been added to onion and sweet potato, then flavoured with all of the spices associated with a classic bhaji – including cumin, ginger, garlic and turmeric. The bhaji is then coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs.

The Bhaji Burger has been added to the menu after Morrisons’ café team listened to customers – who said they wanted more adventurous, flavour-filled vegetarian meals – for keen prices.

The burger isn’t the only new dish on the Morrisons café menu.  A Vegan Butternut Squash & Lentil Lasagne (£5.50), and a Salmon Fillet with a Hollandaise Sauce (£6) – containing just 600 calories each – have been added. And for meat lovers the new menu also includes a Slow Cooked Lamb Shank in Mint Gravy (£6), plus a Beef & Ale Pie served with Chips or Mash (£5) – made with British beef in Morrisons own pie-making factory in Yorkshire.

Audrey Outhwaite, Café Food Developer at Morrisons says:

“We know some customers want to cut down on the amount of meat they eat – and are looking for exciting vegetarian options. So we wanted to come up with a dish that’s packed full of flavour. We’ve created an bhaji in a burger form and we think it’s delicious!”

Morrisons – who famously released the Big Daddy Breakfast and Builders’ Big Breakfast Butty last year – have also expanded their breakfast range. Protein packed millennial-favourites like Breakfast Omelettes with Mushrooms, Tomato & Beans, as well as Eggs Benedict are also now available – costing a healthy £3.75 each.

The new menu is live in all Morrisons cafés now.
