1 in 3 Mums Confess To Getting ‘Mum Drunk’ On Their First Baby-Free Night Out

MOST MUMS can relate to getting ‘mum drunk’ on their first night out without a nappy bag, and new research has revealed exactly what new mums can expect from this baby-free night.

According to new research surveying more than 600 UK mums, commissioned by Myrkl, a food supplement, nearly 1 in 5 (19%) new mums wait until their baby is 4-6 months old before going on a night out and drinking alcohol, with more than 1 in 4 (26%) drinking 3-4 drinks on average.

Nearly 1 in 3 (30%) admit they felt drunk at the end of the night, while 27% were surprised with how little they could drink.

Interestingly, more than 1 in 5 (22%) said the alcohol affected them much quicker than they expected it to.

It seems the first night out without their baby can alter mums’ attitude towards drinking too, as nearly 1 in 5 (19%) admit to having a ‘bad’ hangover the next day, leading the same number (19%) to swerve alcohol for a while after as it put them off drinking.

Some mums even claim the aftermath of their first night can cause them to feel anxious, as 23% say they felt this way the morning after.

Looking at how mums let their hair down on their first night out, 1 in 10 say they did shots, 9% say they vomited, while 7% had to be helped home in some way, such as being put in a taxi or being picked up by a friend or partner.

Mums also struggle to switch off from parent talk too, as more than 1 in 5 (21%) say they talked more than they expected to about their baby.

The research further revealed that drinking habits can change after becoming a parent, as more than half (53%) say they drink less alcohol than they used to, while 21% confess to drinking more.

Looking at the reasons for drinking less alcohol, 1 in 2 mums say not being able to take care of their children was the most important reason, while 38% say it’s because they don’t want to make a bad impression on their children.

Julia Kinner, Chief Marketing Officer at Myrkl.co.uk, said: “It’s clear mums like to let their hair down when they head on their first night after having a baby, but following such a long period of time without drinking, our tolerance to alcohol lessens which causes the ‘mum drunk’ effect to take hold, and we feel drunker much quicker than usual.

“Make sure to pace yourself when you consume alcohol and drink plenty of water so you stay hydrated – you could even take Myrkl before you go out to ensure you have a clear head the next day. The most important thing to remember is to have fun and enjoy yourself!”

Myrkl contains AB001™, the first formula in human history to show promising results of breaking down alcohol effectively in the gut before it reaches the liver. For maximum effectiveness, two Myrkl pills should be taken at least 2 hours before drinking and will remain effective for up to 12 hours after.
