58% of voters believe Government has ‘lost control of the country’s borders’
THE majority of voters believe the Government has now lost control of Britain’s borders, a damning new opinion poll has found.
The latest GB News poll saw 58% of voters say they agree that control of the country’s borders has been lost. That jumped to 75% among Conservatives, and 76% among Leavers. Nationally, only 14% of Brits said they disagreed with the suggestion control had been lost.
It also found that 53% of people rejected the notion that “European courts and judges in Strasbourg should be able to override decisions about Britain’s borders that are made in Britain”.
The figure increases to 79% among Conservative voters and 78% of Leavers.
Another large majority of voters – 61% – believe Albanians entering the country illegally should be deported back there – while only 13% think they should be allowed to stay.
The poll was conducted by People Polling and surveyed 1,212 adults across the UK on Tuesday 1 November.
It also found that 49% of people agreed that no one entering the UK illegally by a small boat from a safe country should be granted a right to settle in the UK.
When asked which leader “would best manage the issue of the small boats crossing the Channel?”, the most popular answer was Nigel Farage on 13%, followed by Keir Starmer on 9% and Rishi Sunak on 3%.
Mr Farage was backed by 28% of Conservative voters – only 8% backed their own leader, Mr Sunak.
Meanwhile on voting intentions, Labour’s lead is down from 31 points to 26, a fall of four points week on week as the Conservative recovery continues.
Labour is still well ahead on 47% (51% last week), Conservatives 21% (20%), Lib Dems 10% (9%), SNP 5% (5%), Green 7% (5%), Reform UK 5% (7%).
Commenting, Matthew Goodwin, professor of politics at the University of Kent, told GB News: “”What these numbers show is that a majority of the country no longer feel that the government has Britain’s borders under control. While almost 60% hold this view, three quarters of Conservatives do. This should be ringing alarm bells in Conservative Party HQ. A party that promised to bring back control is clearly no longer seen as having delivered control.
“Contrary to much of the national discussion this week we find widespread support for pushing back against the influence of European courts and judges on these kinds of issues and for deporting the rising number of illegal migrants from Albania.
“I think this could be the end game for the Conservative Party.
“If they don’t get their hands around this issue, this is going to be the final nudge that people need to, not switch to Labour, but to stay at home and say I’ve had it with all of these parties…
“The Conservative Party no longer owns immigration. That is a huge problem for Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party.”
He added: “We found that most of the country think the Government is no longer in control of Britain’s borders.
“This to me actually takes us back to the early 2010s when public confidence in the immigration system basically collapsed and I think, in a way, we’re right back there.
“It puts Rishi Sunak in a very difficult position…because the migration flows are changing rapidly.”
