Can London Teams Step Up in the Second Half of the Premier League Season?
Six teams represent the capital city in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign. Nevertheless, things have not gone the way their fans had hoper before the kick-off to the season. Halfway through the campaign, we are far more likely to see one of the teams dropped to the Championship football than winning the trophy come May. Right at the half-way mark, www.bettingtips4you.com believe it is a great time to grade the efforts each of the six London sides have made so far in the season. We will also try and predict where they will finish the campaign based on everything we’ve seen so far. Stay tuned and enjoy the ride.
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur are the best-placed London team after 19 rounds of the season. Jose Mourinho’s men hold the fifth position in the league ladder and they are probably the city’s only hope for the upset silverware at the end of the campaign. Tottenham are seven points shy of leaders Manchester United at the moment, but they have a game in hand on the Red Devils. They are guided by a phenomenal attacking pair – Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min. This duo is by far the most lethal attacking tandem in the entire league.
Wherever Spurs score, you can imagine one (or both in most cases) of them will be involved in a goal. Both players have notched 12 goals in 18 appearances so far. Kane has added assists to his already impressive arsenal of weapons. The only problem the fans have with this Spurs team is defensive-minded mentality installed by the Special One. When Tottenham are up by a goal, even against a weaker opposition, they are most likely going to defend until the very final whistle. We don’t say such an approach has not brought the results so far, but we feel there is a much higher potential hidden behind this team. There is no reason to expect the Spurs to drop down in form in the second half of the season and we can certainly see them clinching the top-four finish come May. Will they have what it takes to get involved into the trophy contention, it’s hard to say.
West Ham United
If you are not an avid Premier League aficionado, you will be shocked to see West Ham United above the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League ladder. However, since the two mentioned sides (we’ll discuss them below in the article) have been disastrous so far in the campaign, West Ham’s solid defensive showings have well deserved them a second place in the list of top London teams for this season.
David Moyes’ troops have always been tough to break down on their day, against any opposition in the division. However, they seem to have gained the much-needed consistency in the last few weeks/months. The Hammers have thus won five on the spin across competitions in January, conceding no more than one goal in the process. They sold Sebastian Haller to Ajax, but seem to have Michail Antonio fit and ready to deliver the goods in the final third. It’s hard to expect miracles from the Hammers until the end of the season, but they have great chances of finishing in the top half of the standings with such a strong defensive line.
Chelsea
The Blues are the biggest disappointment in the entire league without doubts. They made massive moves in between two seasons and everyone expected them in the battle for the very top of the table before the kick-off to the campaign. However, Frank Lampard struggled badly to bed in the new arrivals, especially the likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz who are nowhere near their best shape in London.
Roman Abramovich decided to react after a streak of disastrous results. He fired club’s legend Frank Lampard in late-January, opening up the path for the arrival of Thomas Tuchel who had lost his PSG job recently. On paper, the Blues have a star-studded line-up with the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, Ben Chilwell, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Tammy Abraham, etc. Can they finally click, though? Well, we’d say it can’t get any worse than this. Winning just 8 of 19 games in the season is well below par for such an attractive team. They will certainly step up in the weeks and months to come. Unfortunately, there is a high chance it will be a bit too late for the title challenge. However, with the right chemistry, Chelsea can still sneak inside the Champions League positions at the end of the season.
Arsenal
The Gunners are miles away from the top of the standings. However, unlike Chelsea who are underperforming, mid-table is a sad reality for Mikel Arteta and his troops. Arsenal just lack quality to stay competitive at the highest level, especially when they come face to face with some of the strongest teams in the division. They could look towards future with young prospects like Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith-Rowe, and Eddie Nketiah. Nevertheless, this season is most likely lost for them. We’d obviously love Arteta and his men to prove us wrong.
Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace have had a roller-coaster campaign so far in the season. They have not done anything special to impress, but should easily save the top flight status because there are other three terrible teams competing as well. The Glaziers are 11 points adrift of the danger area at the moment. They rely heavily on Wilfried Zaha. If he is not at his best, it is hard to expect goals from Crystal Palace. On the bright side, the defensive line looked somewhat better at the start of the year.
Fulham
The Cottagers will have a mountain to climb to avoid the immediate return to the Championship football next season. They sit third from bottom after 19 rounds and are five points shy of the safe zone at the moment. Scott Parker’s men have a game in hand on the 17th-placed Brighton & Hove Albion who have been anything but impressive throughout the season either. We have an impression that Fulham have significantly improved their overall (defensive in particular) performances in the last several weeks. If they can keep things tight at the back and claim the spoils against the direct rivals in the relegation battle, they might just save themselves at the death.
