HOUSEBUILDER OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR NEW APPRENTICES IN SUSSEX

Applications are now open for budding apprentices looking to join local housebuilder Barratt Homes’ Trade Apprenticeship (Level 2) in either bricklaying or carpentry. Launched this National Apprenticeship Week (8th-14th February), the housebuilder hopes to recruit local talent for the roles at its Chalkers Rise development in Peacehaven, and upcoming site in Yapton.

Apprentices will have the opportunity to join Barratt Southern Counties’ paid programme, offering both formal learning during residential stays at Stephenson’s College in Coalville, Leicestershire, and on-site training with experienced trade specialists. The Trade Apprenticeship (Level 2) will take 18 months to complete and will allow apprentices to develop skills in their chosen construction trade, alongside personal skills such as team leadership and project management.

The new intake of apprentices will begin their roles in September 2021.

Carl Bune, Construction Director at Barratt Southern Counties, comments: “The previous academic year (19/20) has seen a 13% drop in the number of apprenticeship starts when compared year-on-year, with the pandemic further impacting the opportunities available to young people. We are pleased to be able to offer local people the chance to begin their career in construction, and gain a valuable qualification whilst learning practical skills.

“Our apprenticeships are open to all ages, whether you are leaving school or looking for a change in career, and present a fantastic opportunity to gain a respected industry qualification with the chance to further develop those skills within Barratt.”

Luke Eastley (17) is a carpentry apprentice with Barratt Southern Counties. After completing work experience on a building site, he decided to join Barratt’s apprenticeship scheme after completing his GCSE’s. “During my work experience on site, we were given the opportunity to work on different projects and learn more about the range of jobs available. I particularly liked the carpentry side of construction so decided this is what I wanted to focus on,” says Luke. “I’m really enjoying my role so far and have plans to progress with Barratt. Hopefully after I complete by NVQ Level 2, I will be able to go on to complete my NVQ Level 3 qualification, and eventually become a Site Manager.”
