A candid interview with cinematographer Francesco Malandrino

When it comes to the science of cinematography, there is none more passionate than Francesco Malandrino. Although his pursuit of a career behind the camera grew later in life, Francesco’s creativity is one of a kind. I got a chance to speak with him and was greatly inspired by his approach to lie and work.

Q: HELLO FRANCESCO, THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO TALK WITH US, PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF WHO IS FRANCESCO MALANDRINO?

A:

Currently, I work as Director of Photography and Camera Operator in Los Angeles, California. I am an Associate member of Society of Camera Operators (SOC), always inclined to create images for entertainment. Cinematography is my passion, my job, my life

Q: OFTEN TIMES, WE FIND THE WORLD OF FILM ASSOCIATED WITH HOLLYWOOD, CA. IN WHAT WAYS HAS LIVING IN CALIFORNIA HELPED YOUR CAREER?

A:

I think that the main key is making a connection, this works everywhere! I mean it doesn’t matter if you live in Hollywood or any other place in the world, of course Hollywood is a magic place, especially for all cinematographers, you never stop to learn something new day by day, and this make the difference

Q: We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?

A:

In the last 3 years I have tested a new experience of work, I worked as CO-Cinematographers with Maria Perlifonova, Obviously we are not the first two be director of photography at the same films, I love to share set with Maria, she is very talent, and our ideas coincide 99% of the time, this make our job comfortable and probably more interesting than it already is.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG PERSON LOOKING TO ENTER THE WORLD OF CINEMATOGRAPHY?

A:

I think that passion is always the key. Your passion is the key to success. Be patient. Go to different film sets, making connections, be always respectful and try to be nice (if can) and believe in what you do! the road is still long for me too and project after project, satisfaction will also come.

Thank you very much Francesco Malandrino for your time, and good luck for the rest of your career.
