Two forms team up to pick litter along the banks of the Regents Canal

The UOcean Project, part of the Vayyu Foundation, which has set itself the target of removing 1 billion kilos of plastics from the world’s oceans by 2030, will be joining with the Kind.Community to pick litter along the banks of the Regents Canal, stopping it potentially ending up in one of the world’s oceans.

The partnership, which celebrates National Volunteers’ Week, will be Kind Community’s first ever in person volunteering event, and is part of a series of London based litter picking days organised by UOcean.

Chris Desai, head of the UOcean Project commented. “We always have a very straight forward message. Any piece of plastic may end up in the oceans, so all litter picked up has a positive impact on the environment. To be in London with Kind Community which is made up of so many like-minded people, who understand the damage being done by pollution, is a real positive. The more people who join in the more we can achieve.”

Kind Community is made up of many different and diverse people including activists, founders and influencers, who are all focused on tackling the climate crisis. They will be collecting litter alongside the volunteers and advisors from UOcean who organise the groups, provide the tools and equipment to pick up litter. So far, the volunteer teams from UOcean have collected 53,000 kilos of waste which would have ended up in the seas.

“Picking up one plastic bottle or single use face mask may not appear to be significant, but at each event we are collecting many kilos of plastic because more and more individuals are joining litter picking teams. It is great to be joining with a group that really understands the problems created by climate change and pollution. The combined collections here and overseas are the only way to make a difference and start fighting back against plastic waste.” added Chris.

All volunteers are provided with the equipment needed to safely pick up litter so that it can be disposed of in the right way.
