DIRTY MONEY: New study reveals harmful bacteria found lurking on UK banknotes
A new study from Gambling.com has revealed which banknotes across the world carry the most harmful bacteria.
The study gathered 20 of the most used currencies in casinos from around the world such as the UK pound, the US dollar, and the Indian rupee. These banknotes were then swabbed by a team of microbiologists to reveal which bacteria is lurking on them, and the damage this can do to the human body.
Microbes that can cause pneumonia and urinary tract infections were found on UK banknotes
With UK casinos now reopening, it is worrying to discover that a total of seven colonies were found on UK casino banknotes, with the most dangerous being Saccharomyes Cerevisiae. Commonly known as baker’s yeast, this microbe bacteria can cause illnesses such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections, as well as infections to the inner lining of the heart and abdomen in the immunosupressed.
Out of all 20 banknotes to be swabbed, the UK came in at ninth place for most colonies found, a three-way tie with Czech Republic and New Zealand.
How harmful is the bacteria on money?
Microbes cover us and everything we touch, so it is no surprise that your hard-earned cash is covered in them. Many of these microbes are harmless, but some of them can be deadly, especially to people with weakened immune systems. According to the study, 95% of banknotes are covered in harmful microbes.
