London School to add gaming to curriculum following recent research
A local London primary school is joining forces with gaming giant, SEGA for the launch of Sonic Colours: Ultimate. The game’s physical edition will be released on October 1st.
Organised by SEGA and hosted by educational channel, Checkpoint Kids, Wormholt Primary School in White City has accepted the challenge to play Sonic Colours as part of the curriculum this Autumn.
Children will be split into groups and tasked with either creating their own Sonic Colour Wisp or design a contraption for Eggman to capture Sonic. Using the game’s Wisps to explore materials and structure, the lesson will be focused on Key Stage 2 Design and Technology and adheres to the National Curriculum assessment objectives. They will present their designs to each other before interviewing a developer behind the Sonic Colours game and presenting their designs for feedback.
The collaboration comes at a time when gaming is called upon to be included in the national curriculum. Recent studies reveal that more than half of UK 13–18-year-olds believe gaming is a path to the future and would like extracurricular e-sport activities included in their school.
Checkpoint Kids is a free, digital interactive videogame resource for children (4-12) with a wide range of free, interactive and educational materials for tablets, mobiles and desktops. Checkpoint celebrates kids’ engagement (primarily through schools) with videogames. Checkpoint is uniquely placed to provide meaningful connections to wider industry whilst demonstrating the intrapersonal skills acquired through videogames, increasingly desired by employers today, are powerful learning tools in themselves.
Sonic Colours: Ultimate is the new game by SEGA where you will join Sonic on a high-speed adventure to free the Wisps! In Sonic Colours Ultimate, the evil Dr Eggman has built a gigantic interstellar amusement park bursting with incredible rides and colourful attractions – but he’s powering it with a captured alien race called the Wisps.
