CHERTSEY PRIMARY SCHOOL GIVES A HOG A HOME

As research reveals that hedgehog populations have fallen by 30% over the last decade, local housebuilder Barratt Homes has stepped in to protect urban wildlife in Chertsey. To combat the loss of habitat and create a safe space for hibernation over the winter months, Barratt Southern Counties, who is building new homes at its Eldebury Place development on Hanworth Lane, has donated a hedgehog home to nearby St Annes Catholic Primary.

Barratt Southern Counties gave a hedgehog home, water bowl and nutritionally-rich hedgehog food to St Annes Catholic Primary School, which has been installed in a quiet location on school grounds to provide a safe home for hedgehogs to hibernate in over the winter months. Children at the school helped to place the hedgehog home on school grounds, and learned all about the importance of protecting urban wildlife.

Leanne Harris, Headteacher at St Annes Catholic Primary School, commented: “We are proud to play our part in rebuilding essential habitats for hedgehogs, and thank Barratt Southern Counties for its donation. This is a great way to get children involved in nature conservation while building on their knowledge within the curriculum. We are all looking forward to seeing the hedgehogs take residence this winter – and perhaps we may even see some hoglets in the spring!”

Kimberley Benson, Sales and Marketing Director for Barratt Southern Counties said: “Part of our mission as a sustainable builder is to encourage communities to share their space with nature. As research reveals that hedgehogs are vulnerable to extinction in the UK, we hope that by providing a home for hedgehogs to live in, the children at St Annes Catholic Primary School can learn about the importance of protecting our native wildlife. We thank them for creating a safe place for hibernation this winter.”

Barratt Southern Counties is building new homes at its Eldebury Place development in Chertsey, where a collection of one, two and three -bedroom homes are available. Prices start from £274,995 for a one-bedroom apartment.
