Central London named one of UK’s most EV friendly areas, according to study
Central London has been named one of the UK’s most EV friendly local authority areas, according to a recent study, as it boasts a ratio of just five electric vehicles to every publicly available charger.
Drivers in London voiced concern when surveyed about their plans to switch to an electric vehicle in 20221, with 50% citing worry around the number of electric vehicle charges available to them within a reasonable distance of their home.
However, this new analysis of the latest Department for Transport data2 reveals that getting access to a local charging point could be a lot easier than expected.
The car leasing experts at ZenAuto compared new figures on the number of publicly available charging points per local authority area with the number of electric vehicles registered to that area. They then used this to calculate where there is the lowest and highest number of EVs for each charging point.
Central London was in first place in the table, with the best (lowest) ratio of EVs to charging points at just five cars to one charger. Within Central London, Kensington and Chelsea came out on top with a ratio of four to one. In contrast, the ratio was highest in Haringey, with 19 EV drivers having to share single public charger. However, this was still below the UK average of 22.
Of course, these figures take into consideration only the vehicles registered to that area, not those that may travel in, and so ease of access is expected to vary on a day-to-day basis.
Outside of London, Tyne & Wear in the North East came next in the table with a ratio of just eight EVs sharing one charger on average. This was followed by Cumbria (also eight to one), Outer London (11 to one) and Lancashire (13 to one).
