NEWBURY RACECOURSE COUNTDOWNS TO PROGRESSIVE EVOLUTION OF LADIES DAY

Newbury Racecourse has today announced its commitment to progressing the way racegoers understand ‘Ladies Day’ with the launch of its reimagined Lockinge Day, set to take place on Saturday 14th May 2022.

With action on the track including the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes, Newbury’s sole Group One flat race of the season, other aspects of the traditional race day will be reimagined through a contemporary female lens, with influential women from the world of sport joining the celebrations and an exciting racing first that will be heard across the racecourse.

The day represents an invitation from Newbury to encourage newcomers into racing, and while racegoers are still encouraged to embrace individual style, this race day will offer so much more.

As part of the programme of events, Newbury is assembling a panel of female change makers, all recognised for making waves in their respective sports, to become pioneers of the movement and speak publicly about their journeys in sport as part of the aptly named ‘Panel of Pioneers’.

Not only that, but the day will also welcome the first female commentator on a UK racecourse for more than a decade, with Newbury launching a new partnership with broadcaster and aspiring commentator, Dani Jackson. Dani will become its official live on-course commentator for all four charity races across 2022, launching with the Jubilee Charity Race on Lockinge Day in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund.

Speakers on the panel will include top flat jockey Hollie Doyle, who has emerged as one of the sport’s biggest talents, alongside Manchester United Captain and England Lioness Katie Zelem who will be looking ahead to the Women’s European Championships in the UK this summer.

Speaking on her involvement, Katie Zelem said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be heading to Newbury Racecourse for this year’s Ladies Day and cannot wait to speak as part of the panel.”

“It’s so important to celebrate successes of women in sport, whether that’s athletes, or those that do amazing work behind the scenes. We are striving for equality, not just in sport, and we should take the opportunity to promote this wherever possible.”

Also joining Hollie and Katie on the panel will be newly crowned Olympic Champion Curler Eve Muirhead, who led her team to Gold in Beijing earlier this year.

These inspirational figures will take part in a discussion about their personal journey to the top of their game and the challenges and rewards or the highs and lows they have faced when working their way through the ranks. Our panel will also look ahead to their hopes and ambitions for sportswomen of the future and offer advice to inspire young females that want to become athletes.

In celebration of the upcoming Jubilee, racegoers can expect signature cocktails including ‘The Jubilee Spritz’ across selected bars, new premier offerings including the Jubilee Garden Package, live acoustic music throughout the afternoon and the after-party, featuring the dynamic duo and Ibiza legends, Lovely Laura and Ben Santiago who will take to the stage after the last race.

Speaking on the new commitment to Ladies Day, Harriet Collins, Marcomms Director at Newbury racecourse said: “We’re so excited to be evolving the tradition of Ladies Day at one of our biggest race fixtures of the year, Lockinge Day. We’ll absolutely be keeping some of the best loved aspects of the day, while adding some brand new and inspiring elements to celebrate women and all they have achieved both inside and outside of sport.”

Gates open at 11.00, with the first race at 13.35. Prices start from just £27.00 when booked in advance. To book tickets, visit newburyracecourse.co.uk or call 01635 40015.
