TAKE A RIGHT ROYAL SELFIE IN HONOUR OF THE PLATINUM JUBILEE

Local residents taking a walk down The Broadway in Tolworth over the weekend will have noticed a quirky Platinum Jubilee inspired mural that popped up just in time for the celebrations.

The design is by Xiaobin Wang, a 2nd year MA student at Kingston School of Art. She was chosen by Anglian Home Improvements, a British company, and transformed their Tolworth showroom window into something colourful and fun that all families enjoyed during the Jubilee celebrations.

Xiaobin’s creation pays homage to the Queen’s 70 years with a selfie mirror that allows you to photograph yourself ‘shaking hands with Her Majesty’ and share it with your social media following along with your message of thanks for the Queen.

Xiaobin said: “I was delighted to be chosen for this project and have a chance to work on a largescale illustration, which I’ve always wanted to try. For the concept, I applied some similar elements I worked on during my Creative Futures module at Kingston University. When I see my designs come to fruition and being spotlighted in the public, I feel very excited. I’m really grateful to Anglian for giving me such a great opportunity as well as a challenge.”

Although the Jubilee celebrations are over, the artwork will remain at the store in Tolworth for an extended period of time to let people visit and take photos they can look back on their memories around the Jubilee.

The project was organised through Studio KT1, a student agency from Kingston University and Kingston School, and led by Claire Selby, Enterprise Projects Lead.

The initiative, Studio KT1 aims to increase student employability, encourage collaboration between disciplines and develop new products and services.

Claire comments: “At Kingston School of Art we always seek collaborative projects that will both help the development of our students and enrich the local community. This partnership with Anglian Home Improvements has given Xiaobin such a fantastic platform to display her creative work and be paid for one of her first commercial projects. Making her design interactive really allowed it to stand out from the competition, and it perfectly encapsulates the sense of pride and Great Britishness of our nation as we look back on the Jubilee weekend.”

For almost 60 years Anglian Home Improvements has built a proud heritage specialising in double and triple glazing windows, front and back doors and conservatories. It is an Official Partner of The Official Platinum Jubilee Pageant Commemorative Album.

Rachael Munby, Group Marketing Director at Anglian Home Improvements said: “We were thrilled to be able to work with the Kingston School of Art on this project and support the development of young creative talent in the community. We encourage customers to pop down and enjoy Xiaobin’s Jubilee creation and show us their best regal pose.”

She continues: “Over the four-day bank holiday weekend our Tolworth showroom held a special open event where the first 10 customers through our doors received a copy of the commemorative album. There was prosecco and popcorn and the opportunity to view our latest range of windows and doors and discuss home improvement plans with expert designers.”

Rachael continues: “We are proud to say we have been around for much of Her Majesty’s remarkable reign, and we are even prouder of the fact that we have remained a British company. Everything we offer is made in Britain, bringing the reassurance, quality and expertise one expects from an industry-leading British brand.”
