New street name pays homage to Broadwood Piano Factory
A brand-new street which was created in Hackney Wick as part of a new residential development on Dace Road has been named at an official ceremony held by Southern Housing Group and HG Construction, paying homage to world renowned Broadwood Pianos in the process.
John Broadwood & Sons piano factory formerly operated on a street adjacent to Dace Road, manufacturing pianos on the site for half a century during the 1900s. The name ‘Broadwood Street’ was chosen to celebrate the distinguished piano company, which counts royalty amongst its many customers throughout its rich and fascinating history.
As the 100% affordable housing development at Dace Road nears handover stage, Southern Housing Group and HG Construction invited political representatives, project partners and representatives from John Broadwood & Sons to celebrate the naming of the new street and to take a tour of the new scheme. The mixed-use development comprises 144 new homes and over 5500 sqm of commercial space, complete with a renewed public space and courtyard for the local community to enjoy.
Adam Quinn, CEO, HG Construction commented: “We would like to thank all our project partners, political stakeholders, and representatives from Broadwoods and family who have joined us today to celebrate the unveiling of Broadwood Street as we reach project completion stage. John Broadwood & Sons was of major significance to this area for half a century and we are delighted to mark that heritage through this new street name, which was brought forward by Tower Hamlets Council. We are committed to creating positive links with the communities in which we operate, and we are proud that this new development is honouring the history of the local area.
“This is the first of four schemes we are now working on for Southern Housing Group and we are delighted to be assisting them in delivering on their mission of creating quality, affordable homes for people across the south east of England. Our Dace Road development will enable more people to access affordable homes in this vibrant area and will benefit the wider community with beautifully designed public spaces.”
Speaking at the event, Cathy Bacon, Head of Delivery and Regeneration, Southern Housing Group said: “I am delighted to join members of the project team, local stakeholders, representatives from John Broadwood & Sons and members of the Broadwood family in celebrating this significant event.
“The new street has been named to reflect the rich history of the area. Hackney Wick has a longstanding heritage of creative industry, and the vast majority of the commercial space that we’re providing here will be for light industrial, creative maker space, with 750m2 of affordable workspace. We aim to create a vibrant community, a place where people want to come to live and work.
“Southern Housing Group is a key provider in Tower Hamlets and this project forms part of our wider ambitions in the area to provide good quality, affordable homes. The Group is pleased to be working with the local administration to help it to achieve its housing objectives.
“Delivery of this project would not have been possible without the collaborative partnership formed with HG Construction and we look forward to the project completing imminently.”
