Square Mile resident elected to City’s historic Chief Commoner role

A long-standing City of London resident has been elected to a historic role at the Square Mile’s governing body.

Ann Holmes takes office as Chief Commoner after 10 years representing Farringdon Within on the City of London Corporation and more than 20 years living in the ward.

A court assistant with the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers, she is passionate about education and has chaired the governing bodies of two of the City Corporation’s family of schools as well as its Education Board.

In her new role, she will act as a City Corporation ambassador at ceremonial occasions, work to uphold the rights and privileges of the organisation’s elected Members, and take the lead on all matters relating to hospitality.

She has taken on the role, which dates back to 1444, today after being elected by Court of Common Council – the organisation’s primary decision-making body.

City of London Corporation Chief Commoner Ann Holmes said:

“It is an enormous privilege to be elected to this role. I am looking forward to the opportunities it will give me to build a vibrant and constructive relationship with Members, City workers and residents alike.

“The City Corporation is unique in many ways and I welcome the challenge of contributing to effective governance by 125, mainly independent, elected Members.

“As a resident with a huge interest in culture, I look forward to using my convening powers to help the City continue to develop as a financial centre, cultural hub and a place people are proud to live in.”

Mrs Holmes, who has a background in teaching, research and management, succeeds Simon Duckworth as Chief Commoner and will serve a one-year term in that position.
