47% of drivers are cutting deadly costs with the cost of living rising
The cost of living crisis has impacted every corner of society, as people across the UK grapple with escalating prices for basic essentials, some are making decisions that carry significant risk, not just for themselves but for others on the road as well.
International Drivers Association conducted a survey across 2500 motorists to find out how far some Brits are willing to cut costs.
Dodging the MOT Test
In the UK, vehicles are obligated to undergo regular Ministry of Transport (MOT) tests to ensure they adhere to road safety and environmental standards. Yet, with the rise in living costs, there’s a concerning trend of drivers sidestepping these essential checks. 27% of Brits admit to avoiding an MOT test…
Risks of Dodging the MOT:
MOT tests identify potential issues in various vehicle components, from brakes to lights and exhaust systems, confirming that the vehicle is safe to be on public roads.
Car Insurance
Another troubling trend is the uptick in drivers choosing to bypass car insurance. Whilst it can be pricey, especially for younger motorists or those with prior claims, insurance plays a crucial role in safeguarding drivers, passengers, and third parties in the event of an accident. 28% said they have or are driving with no or not the correct insurance
Driving Without Insurance:
Financial Liability: An uninsured driver involved in an accident may face astronomical out-of-pocket costs for damages.
Legal Consequences:
Driving without insurance in the UK is illegal and can result in substantial fines, disqualification, or even a prison sentence.
Lack of Coverage: Without insurance, drivers also miss out on potential benefits like medical coverage, vehicle repairs, or legal defence.
Postponing Repairs and Maintenance
When finances are tight, car maintenance might be one of the first expenditures British drivers curtail. However, neglecting timely repairs or missing regular services can lead to more substantial problems down the line. 47% of drivers have put off a repair due to the cost.
Risks of Overlooking Vehicle Maintenance:
A car that’s not regularly serviced may have undetected issues that could lead to accidents, such as brake failures. Minor issues left unaddressed can escalate. What might be a small expense now could increase into a significant cost later.
Reduced Vehicle Lifespan:
Periodic maintenance ensures the vehicle lasts longer, whereas neglect can shorten its usable life.
Michael Bissona, motoring expert at IDA says:
The cost of living crisis is compelling many to make precarious decisions. But when it comes to vehicle safety and legality, the risks of cutting corners far surpass the immediate savings. Not only do these decisions jeopardise the driver and their passengers, but they also threaten other road users.
