There is still a path to a Conservative victory at the election, says Liam Fox

THE Conservatives still have a path to victory at the next general election, according to former minister Liam Fox.

He told GB News: “I think there is certainly a pathway to victory. I take the polls always with a pinch of salt. To say politicians don’t look at polls, of course is profoundly dishonest, we all look at them but I think that you can put too much emphasis on polls.

“And remember, in 1992 we were all expecting that there’ll be a Labour victory, according to the polls. And I remember sitting in the car as the first results came in thinking ‘we’re going to win’.”

In a discussion with Gloria De Piero, he continued: “Public opinion is quite fluid on the doorstep. A lot of people who might be a bit sullen about the Government are certainly not attracted to Keir Starmer and the Labour Party.

“I don’t know what they stand for in any serious policy debate. And I think that if we see inflation fall, if we see the economy picking up in terms of speed, people will be worried about disrupting that and gambling on an unknown quantity, like Keir Starmer and his Labour Party.

“So I think that if you look at the opinion polls, it’s not unusual for governments to recover quite sharply as they go into their final year.”

On tax cuts, he said: “I would prefer to see any tax cuts on the wealth creating part of our economy. I want to see more small businesses thrive because ultimately they will grow and pay the taxes that will enable us to have the spending.

“That’s where jobs are created. That’s where wealth is created in the economy. We need to focus on how we grow our wealth as a country, not just how we spend it.”
