E-ACT City Heights Academy’s Maths partnership with Dulwich College adds up to success!
A group of Year 9 students from
E-ACT
City Heights Academy in Lambeth, part of
ACT, a family of 28 academies, have been taking part in a new Maths project with Dulwich
College.
This month
Rob
Eastaway, the founder and Director of Maths Inspiration, a national programme of interactive maths lecture shows for teenagers, launched Dulwich
College’s newest partnership initiative, a series of six Royal Institute Mathematics Masterclasses for Year 9 students.
The masterclasses are a series of workshops led by experts from industry, academia, and education. They offer students in-depth investigations of topics in Mathematics combining theory
with interactive exploration and 12 signed copies of Rob Eastaway’s new book,
Head Scratchers, will be awarded as prizes over the six sessions.
The sessions aim to inspire young people in the beauty and wonder of Mathematics
and to develop a sense of enjoyment in the subject by offering in-depth investigations of topics from beyond the normal curriculum. 60 curious mathematicians from ten local secondary schools, including E-ACT City Heights Academy, gathered in the college’s
auditorium for an interactive session of Mathematics puzzles and magic this month.
The focus of the first session was the application of Maths in everyday life and it’s uses and some student comments on the session are as follows:
”I think the session was very useful and helped me understand how to work out questions I didn’t know before. The way the questions were asked were really fun and let us focus more since
the maths were related to real life.”
”The maths’s Dulwich College session was really good. I really liked the way questions were asked from us which made us really think about how maths can be used in real life. It has
made me think about what career I want to have in the future.”
As part of the E-ACT family of schools, City Heights adopts their Opening Minds Opening Doors (OMOD) ethos, which is about ensuring children discover a world of possibilities. These masterclasses
embody this principle and City Heights aims to challenge students who are well-motivated and curious about Mathematics and are keen to reach those who may not have access to similar opportunities.

“I am delighted that some of our Year 9 students are taking part in these Maths masterclasses at Dulwich College. I know they really enjoyed the session this month and are looking forward
to the next one. I hope these sessions will open their eyes to the world of Mathematics and inspire them to continue their engagement with the subject.
“It’s so important for children to keep pushing the limits of their knowledge and at City Heights we want to encourage students to explore their interests to the best of their ability.
Which is why I am so pleased we can work closely with Dulwich College on brilliant initiatives such as these Maths masterclasses.”
