INTRODUCING THE MALAY COOK BY RANIE SAIDI – A RISING STAR IN LONDON’S CULINARY SCENE CELEBRATING THE MALAY CUISINE THROUGH HIS LATE GRANDMOTHER’S RECIPES ONE DISH AT THE TIME

The Malay Cook supper club, created by Ranie Saidi, is fast becoming a must-attend event for food enthusiasts across London. This unique culinary venture celebrates the rich, diverse flavours of the Malay cuisine, skilfully crafted by Ranie, an emerging cook and recipe writer from Malaysia, who is making waves in the city’s dynamic food scene.

Ranie’s culinary journey began in the heart of his grandmother’s kitchen in a small Malay village, where he first learned the art of traditional Malay cooking. After moving to London over a decade ago to study law, he discovered a newfound passion for hospitality while working at a Malaysian café. This experience paved the way for a career in brand and marketing within the hospitality industry, where he collaborated with renowned chefs like Andi Oliver and Thomasina Miers OBE. His work on the ‘Dinner with Friends’ supper club series at Red Rooster Restaurant in Shoreditch received accolades from leading publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, The New York Times, and The Telegraph.

In his role as Director of Brand and Marketing at Native Places, Ranie continued to collaborate with culinary icons, including MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers OBE and acclaimed plant-based chef Bettina Campolucci Bordi. His recognition as a top six finalist for the 2023 Yan Kit So Award for Asian Food Writers further cemented his growing influence in the UK culinary world.

With a growing social media presence, Ranie has become an influential advocate for Malay cuisine in the UK. As Malaysian cuisine gains traction and recognition, becoming a staple in British households, Ranie is taking his passion to the next level with an exclusive collaboration with DELLI. This platform, known for showcasing the best independent food and drink brands, will feature Ranie’s limited-edition Malay sauces, meticulously crafted in his kitchen in South East London.

Ranie’s first offering, Malay Red Ginger Lily Chilli Oil (Minyak Cili Bunga Kantan), taps into the growing British obsession with chilli oil but introduces a unique Malay twist. Infused with the Red Ginger Lily, or torch ginger flower—a celebrated ingredient in Malay cooking—this chilli oil stands out with its slightly sweet and sour flavour, reminiscent of lemongrass, ginger, and lime leaves. This product not only introduces a distinct Malay ingredient to the British palate but also celebrates the rich culinary heritage of the Malay Peninsula.

Honouring his late grandmother’s cherished recipe, Ranie’s second product with Delli, Malay Peanut Sauce, is a deeply personal creation that embodies the essence of Malay palate. This sauce, a harmonious blend of sweetness, savoury notes, umami creaminess, and a touch of spice, is a piece of Ranie’s family history. Priced at £6.99 per jar, both products are available on DELLI.

Ranie’s venture into the food scene with The Malay Cook supper clubs has been nothing short of a success. His summer pop-ups at Alexandra Palace and sold-out events at Soho House, as part of their ‘Around Our Table’ chef series, have garnered overwhelming demand. The interest has been so significant, with even Soho House founder Nick Jones expressing admiration, that plans are underway to expand The Malay Cook supper club to other venues in London and beyond, including New York.

Ranie’s most recent collaboration with Curry Club London, a Hackney-based social enterprise, saw over 100 guests come together to celebrate dishes inspired by his late grandmother, a beloved community chef in Kamunting, a village in Taiping Perak, Northwest Malaysia. This winter, Ranie will collaborate with The Dusty Knuckle Bakery, a cherished East London community-focused bakery, to transform the space into a celebration of Malay culture. Tickets for this highly anticipated event will be announced soon.

Ranie Saidi’s dedication to promoting Malay cuisine, combined with his modern approach to Southeast Asia’s recipe development, makes him a standout figure in London’s culinary scene. As he continues to share his rich heritage and passion for food, Ranie is undoubtedly shaping the future of Malay cuisine of Malaysia in the UK.
