Bio Capital Group, one of the UK’s leading energy providers is pleased to announce that its contract with Lewisham Council has been extended for a further two years. This extension builds on the success of the ongoing collaboration and strengthens Bio Capital’s role in driving the borough’s efforts toward a more sustainable and circular economy.

Under the renewed agreement, Bio Capital will continue to receive household food waste from across Lewisham, at the company’s state-of-the-art East London Biogas plant in Dagenham. There, the food waste is converted into sustainable biomethane and biofertiliser for agricultural use. The biomethane produced is powering local homes and businesses with a low-carbon, 100% renewable alternative to fossil fuels.
The agreement will see Bio capital take in another 12,000 tonnes of food waste which has the carbon savings of 3,123.97 tonnes CO2e which is equivalent to taking 1,516 cars off the road per year.

The partnership with London Borough of Lewisham Council highlights Bio Capital’s commitment to advancing the circular economy model, where waste is not only reduced but repurposed to create valuable resources for the community. By turning food waste into energy and biofertiliser, Bio Capital is helping to drive a local, sustainable solution that benefits both the environment and the local economy.

Since beginning this collaboration, Lewisham Council has achieved a 65% increase in food waste tonnages across the borough between 2023 and 2024. This has resulted in the successful implementation of food waste collection initiatives in 55 schools, creating a foundation for further expansion. Moving forward, these efforts will support the council’s plans to roll out food waste collections to estates, private developments, flats above shops, and local businesses, helping to create a more sustainable borough.

Bio Capital has also sponsored the design and installation of vibrant vehicle livery on the food waste collection vehicles throughout Lewisham. This initiative aims to raise awareness and engage local residents in the importance of food waste recycling and our partnership. The vehicles feature eye-catching graphics and educational messaging designed to encourage more residents to participate in the food waste recycling and embrace sustainable habits.

As Lewisham Council continues to expand its food waste collection services, particularly to estate properties, Bio Capital anticipates an increase in food waste volumes over the coming months. This growth will further strengthen the partnership and enhance the positive environmental impact of the project.
