Full line-up of cult classic films and live Fisherman’s Friends performances to be enjoyed from the comfort of your car atop Watergate Bay announced today

The team behind Europe’s original surf publication, Wavelength has just announced the summer’s line-up of cult classic movies set to screen from atop the clifftop at Watergate Bay, Cornwall. The cinematic summer schedule includes some of cinema’s best movies, both contemporary and those that have stood the test of time, delivering a heady dose of nostalgia and entertainment in the most inspirational setting overlooking the sea near Newquay.

In addition to this epic line-up, from Sunday 2nd August, for three consecutive Sunday evenings, the widely-loved Fisherman’s Friends band will be exclusively showcasing their story from tiny Cornish fishing village to global stardom, performing their world-famous shanties live from the clifftops before the 2019 movie airs.

The band will be in will be singing live on stage for one hour before each screening to the backdrop of Watergate Bay and with their folk repertoire coming through car stereos via a special frequency. These performances are the only ones in the band’s summer schedule with their usual Port Isaac performances and festivals, events and appearances cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kicking off the cinematic-summer line-up on the Boardmasters festival site is Blue Juice with star Sean Pertwee attending the launch on July 24th for a media photocall opportunity. Fittingly celebrating its 25th birthday this year, the film is described as ‘mind candy for those who like surfing and Cornwall’. Blue Juice was released in 1995, starring Sean Pertwee, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Euan McGregor. The timeless flick follows a small, but hardy, group of British surfing enthusiasts who have learned to make the best of the flat waves and low tides of their homeland.

From Friday 31st July, on five consecutive Friday summer evenings, the team will be running 1991 American action-crime film Point Break, starring Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Lori Petty and Gary Busey. Full of energetic sequences and surf culture, megastar Reeves plays football star-turned-FBI agent who goes undercover as a surfer to track down a gang of bank robbers. Taking cinemagoers back to 1994, Saturday 1st August will air neo-noir crime film and Quentin Tarantino masterpiece, Pulp Fiction.

On Saturday August 8th, locals and holidaymakers alike can enjoy one of the most beloved films ever made, Grease, following the trials and tribulations of Danny and Sandy, head bopping to the catchy soundtrack and reciting those famously famous quotes. 2001 documentary film, Dogtown and Z-Boys which explores the pioneering of the Zephyr skateboard team in the 1970s and the evolving sport of skateboarding will be screened on Sunday 23rd August and Friday 4th September respectively. And cultural phenomenon, Back to the Future will screen on Saturday 29th August.

With space for over 200 cars and vans, The Wavelength Drive-In Cinema Series will kick-off on Friday 24th July. The concept is an extension of Wavelength’s highly popular ‘Cinema Club’ which has seen a series of over 25 sold-out surf cinema events across London and the UK over the last 18 months. The Wavelength team are working in close collaboration with Cornwall Council to ensure all public safety requirements are met and exceeded across the summer events. Up to 200 cars per event will be parked in an appropriately safe and structured way and there will also be a host of on-site options including street food from Cornish suppliers, live music, a socially distanced tombola, popcorn stands and craft beer bars. Safety-led additions such as hand sanitisers, facemasks and queuing processes and signage will be included across the event site and operational running of the sessions.

The picturesque drive-in cinema event site, Trebelsue Farm, is perched above the beach with an unparalleled view. Best known for the 50,000 capacity Boardmasters festival, the setting will offer jaw dropping views, out across the Atlantic, beyond the 2 x 8 metre cinema screen.

Tickets for the drive-in events are available at a cost of either £5 per person or £25 per car or van and driver with a maximum of five people per vehicle – these can be purchased from the Wavelength website. However, tickets for the Fisherman’s Friends’ viewings (from Sunday August 2nd for three weeks) are £30 per car and £10 per passenger.
