Award winning filmmaker fundraises for cancer charity Maggie’s with London screenings of personal documentary

Award winning filmmaker David Nicholas Wilkinson is fundraising for national cancer charity Maggie’s through a series of screenings of his new documentary 1 IN 2, including at Genesis Cinema, Mile End Road on November 13, the Chiswick Cinema on November 14, the ArtHouse Crouch End on November 15 and the David Lean Cinema in Croydon on November 17.
The unprecedented documentary follows David’s own experience of a stage 4 bowel cancer diagnosis while exploring the wider issues surrounding the disease, its symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
It also shines a light on the increasing number of younger people being diagnosed with bowel cancer, and the danger of symptoms being dismissed because of age.
The extraordinary film features a bowel surgeon who was herself diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer at just 44 and highlights the many ways the disease can present and the importance of understanding the potential symptoms.
It is a documentary that will feel incredibly relatable for people living with cancer today.
And, in an act of astonishing generosity David has kindly chosen to donate proceeds from the screenings to the national cancer support charity marking 30 years of transformative cancer care in 2026.

1 IN 2 will have its world premiere in Stirling as part of the Central Scotland Documentary Festival on November 7 with proceeds going to Maggie’s in Forth Valley.

The film will then be screened at The Light Cinema in New Brighton cinema only eight miles from Maggie’s Wirral centre on November 11th.

Then on November 13th the film will be shown at Genesis, Mile End Road, near Maggie’s Barts in London, then at the Chiswick Cinema – also in London – on November 14th before being shown at the ArtHouse Crouch End only 3 miles from Maggie’s at the Royal Marsden on November 15th.
On 17 November the film will be shown at the David Lean Cinema in Croydon and then on 21st of November, the Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury, where proceeds will go to the Maggie’s centre in Cheltenham.

But 1 IN 2 isn’t simply a film about cancer and its treatment. David also sets out to demystify what happens after a diagnosis, showing how advances in cancer treatment have changed the experience for patients compared with previous generations.
There are, unsurprisingly, difficult moments, but there are also moments of humour and, above all, hope.
David also hopes the film might save a life.
The film features cancer support charity Maggie’s, which has 27 centres across the UK. David filmed in the charity’s support centres in Lanarkshire, West London and Barts. He also conducted an interview with Maggie’s Chief Executive Dame Laura Lee DBE which features in the film.
David Nicholas Wilkinson, Director of 1 IN 2, commented:
“Maggie’s Wirral allowed me to film there and I am grateful of that because, of all the charities, for me personally, they were the most helpful. I blamed myself for having bowel cancer because I’d eaten so healthily over the last 40 years that I thought, somehow, it was something I’d ingested that had caused it all.
“Bizarre, I know, but when you get these devastating diseases, you look for answers, and I blamed myself. Only when I spoke to somebody at Maggie’s, and we talked about this rationally, did I realise that, of course, it had nothing to do with me. It’s hereditary. I’ve just got what my father and grandfather had.
“So, Maggie’s taking part was perfect, and I want to give something back to them. That’s why I’ve organised this series of income-earning premieres for them.”
Dame Laura Lee DBE, Maggie’s CEO, said:
“We are so delighted that we are part of this important film in Maggie’s 30th year, raising awareness of such vital issues faced by people with cancer.
“Not only that but it is such a privilege that the money raised will be donated to Maggie’s – this is a wonderful display of kindness and it will help us to provide more care to people who need us, particularly as the number of people with cancer continues to grow.
“I am particularly grateful to the work of David Wilkinson – he is not a bystander film maker – he knows first-hand the experience of living with cancer and it is brilliant that he is willing to share that experience in such an impactful way.”
