Bensons looks to appoint newly created Chief Sleep Officer role

A new study has revealed that the average worker gets bored after three years in a role with w/c 8th January being cited as the most popular time to look for a role.

The study of 2,000 workers by UK bed specialist Bensons for Beds revealed that over half found the ‘three-year itch’ starts when you feel anxious every Sunday night (51%) or not getting on with your boss (32%).

While 31% think a lack of sleep due to stress is a sign to start looking elsewhere.

Of those who are thinking about changing jobs, 38% want to earn a higher salary, 29% cite work stress and 23% want to try new things. 1 in 7 blame not working well with their boss .

When quizzed on their ‘dream job’, 50% say the most important thing would be flexible working hours. Whilst 30% would happily stay in bed all day as a full-time job.

In a bold effort to help make sure the nation is getting the best night’s sleep possible, Bensons has today announced the creation of a new role for a Chief Sleep Officer (CSO).

Carrie Westwell, Head of HR at Bensons comments: “After a while, it’s understandable professionals will crave new opportunities and look elsewhere for something to fulfil their employment needs.

“It’s been interesting to find out the most common signs that someone needs to start the job search again.

“The new year is a great time to think about your career, but everyone else will probably be thinking about the same thing – so competition will be fierce.

“The new CSO position is a 6-month part time role with a salary of £10k and covers 874 hours of training, napping and shopping. The lucky candidate will get to test up to one mattress every fortnight, four pillows per month and one bedframe every 6 weeks.

“It’s the perfect role for anyone who wants to supplement their existing income or is keen to explore the bed industry before deciding to take the big plunge and change careers.”

The Bensons research also revealed that 28% of Brits have fallen asleep at work when they weren’t supposed to – blaming it on boredom (33%), not feeling well (30%), and the room being too warm (24%).

More than 1 in 10 have previously started a ‘side hustle’ within the past 12 months as a way of making money on the side of their main income. With selling old clothes on second-hand apps or websites being the number one pursued job (21%).

Whilst a small percentage have explored more inventive roots to make additional cash including pet sitting (5%), making casts of people’s feet (3%) and drawing people’s pets (1%).

The typical side hustler makes an average earning of £229 per month, spending just 10 hours per week doing it.

Of those who are yet to embark upon this venture, 20% are considering it this year – with proofreading, product testing, and admin/data entry being among the top jobs.

Whilst product testing will form part of the new CSO role it isn’t all sleeping on the job, as a key element of the job will also require the CSO to visit Bensons very own factory in Huntingdon and spend time with the innovation team to learn about how the mattress and bed supply chain works from ‘spring to sleep’.

Over 14 hours of ‘in bed’ training will be given to the lucky candidate to help develop their knowledge and understanding of sleep. They will also learn to recognise the triggers that contribute to poor sleep and the good habits people should adopt to help enhance optimal sleep patterns.

While the position is fully remote, applicants must be based in the UK and hold a relevant qualification from college in marketing or social media. To apply, candidates will need to create a piece of content to explain why they think they’re right for the role. They will also need to demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Westwell continues: ““As the world resets in January, so can your career.

“Changing jobs isn’t just a shift in location, it’s a recalibration of your professional trajectory and an opportunity to align your passion with your profession.

“And if your passion is sleep – we might just want to talk to you…”
