Refurbishment specialists Better Green Living has recently transformed King’s College London’s Strand campus, as it enhanced the university’s most visible, high‑traffic urban frontages into a community garden.
Designed in three weeks, the newly installed planter works improved the visual amenity and placemaking along the Strand frontage, enhanced micro‑biodiversity and pollinator habitats which will help manage surface water more sustainably using integrated Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
Throughout the works, disruption was kept at a minimum by fabricating the designs off site. The team then delivered a robust, low-maintenance solution tailored to a public setting which has a minimum 20-year design life.
With sustainability at the forefront of Better Green Living’s work, the project was explicitly designed to embed urban biodiversity into a dense central London street scene and increase access to nature at street level through planting and habitat features.
From a significantly improved public realm at one of King’s College London’s most prominent campus frontages to new pollinator‑friendly planting and micro‑habitats, contributing to London’s wider biodiversity goals.
Sara Kassam, Director of Sustainability, Estates and Facilities, commented, “These planters serve multiple purposes for us at King’s. Not only are they providing a welcoming frontage to one of our most iconic campuses, but they are also helping us to further embed biodiversity and sustainability into the everyday experience of our staff, students and visitors.”
Tom Dodson, Chief Operations Officer at Better Green Living, commented: “It’s been great to continue our relationship with King’s College London as we help transform the green space at The Strand campus. Adhering to the University’s Climate & Sustainability and Biodiversity action plans, we worked together to ensure the designs were thoughtfully developed to enhance biodiversity, support long-term sustainability goals, and create a vibrant landscape for students, staff, and the wider community to enjoy.”
