Bobby’s Ice Snapper tops lolly chart

As the UK summer winds down the makers of a 39p ice pole are celebrating after it was named as the surprising best selling summer snack in convenience stores and corner shops.

High summer temperatures have helped Bobby’s Ice Snapper sell seven million units this year with sales in convenience stores outstripping products such as big name treats such as Walls Cornetto and Magnum.

The hot summer has been a bumper time for makers of ice cream and lollies with many brands reporting strong sales figures.

The makers of Bobby’s Ice Snapper have had their best summer ever with sales up 2m compared to a typical year.

The product is sold exclusively through corner shops and convenience stores – where it outsells every other ice lolly or branded ice cream product.

Now analysis of sales data by retail intelligence company PayPoint has named the Ice Snapper as the UK’s top selling heatwave treat.

PayPoint looked at sales across 28,000 convenience stores throughout the UK, finding a 242% increase in ice cream and ice lolly sales overall, with Ice Snappers the top freezer pick.

The British product was the number one of a top ten made up entirely of treats from household names Walls and Nestle.

The top ten products keeping Brits cool according to PayPoint:

Bobby’s Ice Snapper
Walls Calippo Orange
Walls Twister
Walls Magnum Classic
Walls Magnum White Chocolate
Walls Feast
Walls Cornetto Classic
Walls Calippo Cola
Walls Cornetto Strawberry
Nestle Fab

Bobby’s Ice Snapper has been a favourite for more than 25 years although many customers may not be aware of the brand name, referring to it simply as an ice pop.

Bobby’s Managing Director Dave Suckling said: “This summer’s prolonged hot weather has meant many of us have been heading to the freezer for a cool down snack.

“We are delighted that Bobby’s Ice Snapper has been named as the UK’s top selling freezer pick ahead of well known products from Walls and Nestle.”

“The Ice Snapper has been a favourite for many years and typically we sell around 5m units annually.”

“This year sales have been much stronger than usual and we are expecting to sell more than 7m Ice Snappers.”

“We are putting the increase down to the hot weather and to our customers’ desire for a simple ice treat that will help them cool down without filling them up or spoiling their appetites.”

Bobby’s Ice Snapper comes in a 90ml pack and contains 41 calories. They are sold through a network of independent retailers across Britain.

Ben Ford, Retail Services Director at PayPoint, said: “As the mercury rose to new highs, thousands of people made the short trip to their local convenience store to take advantage of well-stocked freezers. The booming sales have been great news for consumers and retailers alike.”
