British Gas Energy Trust provides lifechanging grants to prepayment meter customers

The British Gas Energy Trust (the Trust) is currently providing grants of up to £1,700 to households struggling with debt on a prepayment meter. The Trust’s Individuals and Families Fund (I&F) is open to eligible customers of any energy supplier, if that supplier does not have its own support scheme.

I&F has supported people like Alice*, a single parent struggling with medical conditions causing her severe pain and reduced mobility. Alice’s daughter is registered disabled, and she has had to reduce her working hours to provide necessary care, resulting in much lower income. Additionally, when Alice first moved into her home, her meter was mixed up with another property, resulting in her being incorrectly billed. Anxious about her financial situation, Alice received money advice and was confident she could manage her ongoing charges if her debt was cleared. Alice applied for I&F and was awarded a grant of £1,509.

About the grant, Alice said: “Over the moon with the support I’ve received – I really appreciate it”

Trust CEO Jessica Taplin said:
“Prepayment meter customers are among those most vulnerable to rising energy costs. The Individuals and Families Fund is here to close that gap by offering targeted grants to those who need it most. We encourage anyone in financial difficulty to first speak with their energy supplier, as they may be able to provide immediate support. If more help is needed, we’re here and we urge people to come forward and apply.”

As part of its support package, the Trust also funds over 40 money and energy advice projects in community-based charities and social enterprises across Britain. These projects provide clients with free and impartial advice on things such as budget planning, benefits and income maximisation checks, energy efficiency measures and generalist subjects such as housing, employment and mental health support.
