Comer Homes Mark History at Storied Newland Park with an Exclusive Time Capsule

Comer Homes, the leading developer behind Newland Park, is set to mark a new chapter in the 350-year history of the storied development, by planting a time capsule within the communal gardens of the new Pankhurst Collection of apartments. Set on 200-acres of private grounds, Newland Park has connections to King George III, Emmeline Pankhurst and the Suffragette movement, as well as famous authors, poets and playwrights such as H.G Wells, George Bernard Shaw and John Milton.

Comer Homes will enlist the help of a local school to choose what to include in the time capsule, whilst also setting pupils with the challenge of writing stories and poems, as well as drawing pictures that detail the history of the site and their visions of what life will be like at Newland Park in the next 50 years.

Caroline Comer, Sales & Marketing Director at Comer Homes, said: “Newland Park has an incredible history and is something that we want to honour and commemorate. The street names have been chosen to acknowledge the famous past residents and visitors, and this time capsule will allow us to mark the next chapter of the story here, which is the opening of a fantastic development that will be an exceptional place to live and for the community to enjoy.”

Steeped in history, Newland Park, originally a Grade II listed mansion house, has been home to or welcomed a wide range of figures whose stories are forever etched in time. One of the most notable to frequent the manor house is King George III, who once enjoyed hunting on the grounds with then owner Henry Gott. One of the King’s greatest hunting achievements, the capture of a prime stag, is honoured by a stone statue called Gott’s Monument, which has been refurbished and restored by Comer Homes.

Surrounded by thick woodland, Newland Park offers fantastic privacy, which once made the former estate the perfect safe haven for Emmeline Pankhurst and numerous Suffragette members. Under the ownership of politician and women’s rights advocate Henry Devenish Harben and his wife Agnes Harben (founder of the United Suffragists) the house and grounds became a refuge for suffragettes from 1910 to 1921.

The calm and peaceful setting has also attracted numerous famous authors, poets and playwrights, such as acclaimed author H.G. Wells and Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. The renowned poet John Milton, who would regularly walk the grounds, wrote the epic blank verse poem Paradise Lost when in residence at the nearby Milton’s Cottage.

The co-founder of the London School of Economics, husband and wife Sidney and Beatrice Webb held dinner parties at Newland Park with their fellow founders of the highly revered business school. They also used the house as a hub to transform the Fabian Society into the pre-eminent politico-intellectual society in Edwardian England. Sidney Webb also went on to write the original pro-nationalisation Clause IV for the British Labour Party, which became one of their chief political values.

Residents and visitors will still be able to experience and touch a part of Newland Park’s history, which is the expansive landscaped gardens that were designed and laid out by eminent landscape designer Thomas Mawson in 1903.

The majority of Mawson’s grounds survive largely intact and have been beautifully brought back to life, with mature ornamental planting and an extensive formal drive from Chalfont St. Peter providing a good example of a traditional Chiltern estate. Thomas Mawson’s lifetime works include the Peace Palace Gardens at The Hague, The Rushton Hall Estate in Northamptonshire and the nearby Grade II listed Bushey Rose Garden in Hertfordshire.

Newland Park will offer residents and visitors direct access to the lush grounds that will feature a mixture of landscaped and wild planted gardens and parkland, as well as children’s play areas and modern sports facilities.

Offering the first opportunity to live on the private estate for over 100 years, the first phase of homes at Newland Park are currently available, which includes the Pankhurst Collection of 42 apartments across four well-designed blocks surrounding a landscaped central courtyard. The Gott Collection features the remaining 22 units available, set within three buildings facing onto a large communal green space.

Ranging in size from 1,055 sq. ft. to 2,831 sq. ft., the spectacular apartments are well-proportioned and configured to meet modern lifestyle needs, with flexible spaces that can be freely arranged. The majority of homes include private terraces or balconies, as well as allocated parking within a secure underground facility, with the option of electric vehicle charging points, as well as ample street level visitor parking available.

A stunning health & wellness spa facility will be open to residents of Newland Park, as well as members of the local community. The state-of-the-art spa centre will provide a swimming pool, tennis courts and Racquets Club, multi-sports pitches, Padel courts and tennis courts with an inflatable dome. There will also be a five-star spa, bar, restaurant and relaxation terraces.
