Condiment confessions? Heinz reveals the Nation’s weird and wonderful sauce combos
A HEINZ SAUCE FOR THE NATION, BY THE NATION: As a new poll by Heinz reveals we’re a nation of sauce lovers, the iconic sauce maker is putting the power in the people’s hands for the first time ever by asking for Brits’ help in choosing an exciting new sauce variety.
The Heinz research shows Brits are crazy for condiments: 77% of us currently have three or more sauces in our kitchens, while 14% of respondents have a whopping 10 or more sauces at home! Nearly half of the people answering the survey (47%) would even REFUSE to eat certain foods if they couldn’t have it with their fave sauces.
And we Brits love to mix things up too: Most (63%) have two or more bottles of sauce on the table with their meals, whether it’s the classic red and yellow squiggles of ketchup and mustard on our hot dogs, or both BBQ sauce and mayo slathered between burger and bun. Half of those surveyed (51%) mix sauces up to create their own unique sauce right there on the plate.
These saucy findings have inspired Heinz to investigate creating an all-new sauce mash-up, and this summer they’re giving YOU the chance to have your say on which two of their iconic sauce varieties should become one, based on the top combinations revealed in the survey of 2,000 Brits.
The vote will be between:
- Mustard & Mayonnaise
- Tomato Ketchup & Mustard
- Mayonnaise & Hot Chilli Sauce
- Mayonnaise & BBQ sauce
Heinz has already combined the flavours of the iconic Heinz Tomato Ketchup and Heinz [Seriously] Good Mayonnaise – Brits’ favourite sauce mash-up – to make Heinz Saucy Sauce, launched to great fanfare in 2019.
Other combinations that set tongues wagging at Heinz HQ were Tomato Ketchup mixed with Salad Cream, Tomato Ketchup with Tartare Sauce (Tarchup anyone?) and Tomato Ketchup with Brown Sauce.
Some Brits’ preferred sauce mash-ups, however, aren’t so much delicious as downright peculiar, with respondents telling Heinz they liked to combine mayonnaise with JAM or apple sauce. Another respondent named peanut butter and vinegar as their mystifying blend of choice.
Other adventurous combinations Brits admit to eating include mayonnaise with sriracha and blue cheese sauce, ketchup and yoghurt, or salad cream with sweet chilli sauce and a dash of pickle juice. Yum.
Doron Lass, Brand Manager at Heinz Sauces, says: “We’ve absolutely loved learning more about how Britain blends its own sauces, although I won’t be trying jam and mayo any time soon! Whether slapping them on sausages or spreading on picnic sarnies, it seems Brits love sauces almost as much as we do here at Heinz, so we think it’s high time they had a say in our next sauce mash-up. We can’t wait to see what they vote for!”
