Copenhagen Food Trend Arrives In London: Celebrate Fastelavn with Ole & Steen’s Festival Bun pastries
This February, Danish bakery Ole & Steen celebrates the return of Fastelavn with true carnival enthusiasm, bringing a taste of the colourful Danish holiday to UK bakeries with its range of limited edition, delicious Festival buns.
Fastelavn (fast-e-la-ven), which translates as “Fast-evening”, is a traditional pre-lent carnival that traces all the way back to Medieval times, long celebrated in Denmark with lots of colour, costume and laughter as a time of fun and indulgence before commencing Lent- much like a Danish Pancake Day!
But at Ole & Steen this month, the pancake batter will be staying in the cupboard. Instead, for a limited time only, the bakery is bringing carnival flair to its stores with a range of scrumptious Festival buns. Inspired by the traditional Danish Fastelavnsboller, these pastry buns are filled to the brim with cream and topped with a variety of delicious frostings and toppings.
The line-up this year features not only the return of Danish favourites, including the timeless Vanilla Festival Bun and classic Mocha Festival Bun, but the all-day bakery will also showcase a new vegan twist on the Fastelavn celebrations, with the delightfully zingy Lemon & Passionfruit Festival Bun (VG). And that’s not all, also joining in on the Fastelavn festivities is the brand-new Rhubarb Festival Bun, bringing bold new flavours to the traditional holiday.
Vanilla Festival Bun (£5.45) – Danish pastry bun filled with vanilla and whipped cream, topped with white chocolate and more whipped cream.
Mocha Festival Bun (£5.45)- Danish pastry bun filled with coffee cream and salted caramel, topped with whipped cream and dark chocolate.
Lemon & Passionfruit Festival Bun (VG) (£5.45) – Vegan Danish pastry swirl filled with passionfruit cream and lemon cream, topped with passionfruit powder and flower petals.
Rhubarb Festival Bun (£5.45) – Danish pastry bun filled with rhubarb mousse and baked rhubarb, topped with white chocolate and icing.
The full Fastelavn range arrives in all Ole & Steen bakeries from 30th January – 26th February 2024 and is available for click and collect via the Ole & Steen app during this time. However, for those who can’t pop into a bakery, don’t worry, Deliveroo can deliver the Fastelavn celebrations directly to your door from all participating bakeries.
With so many exciting flavour combinations, the bakery is offering a sweet-tasting bundle, with a choice of any two festival buns for £8.45, available for the duration of the celebration.
Don’t miss out on the festivities this February – head into an Ole & Steen store for a taste of the celebrations!
