A gym class that takes place in total pitch black to heighten exercisers’ senses is the hottest trend in Dubai – and now Londoners are calling for it to be imported.
“Dark experiences” are nothing new to the capital – London’s iconic Dans Le Noir eatery has been a popular hotspot for a decade. A destination for diners to get a sensory overload whilst tucking into a delicious tasting menu.
GymNation, the Middle East’s leading gym chain, launched Class Dans Le Noir last week which is a workout experience unlike anything seen before – because you won’t see a thing.
It’s a first-of-its-kind fitness experience that strips away mirrors, screens and ego to leave only what matters, the work.
Borrowing from the global cult phenomenon of dining in the dark, Dans le Noir is a 45-minute, lights-off class that removes vision entirely to force genuine body awareness, accelerate focus, and make the gym floor the most level playing field in fitness. With no mirrors, phones or visual distractions, the experience shifts attention away from how you look and back to how you move.
For many the fear of being watched, compared, or judged can be enough to prevent them from entering onto the gym floor. Dans le Noir removes that barrier structurally by creating an environment where appearance takes a back seat to movement. In a space where nobody can see anybody, the first-timer and the seasoned athlete are equal.
The headphones add a further dimension. With the instructor’s voice delivered directly into the ear and an immersive soundtrack removing all ambient distraction, the class creates a sensory environment – just like London’s very own Dans Le Noir which instead offers up a culinary sensory experience.
The class has seen social media explode, racking up thousands of likes and comments with users divided and fitness-obsessed Londoners even asking when it will come to the UK capital.
One user Rashood_68 commented:
‘Gym for introverts 😂😂😂 ’ and another commenting ‘Sleep while u get slim 😂’
However some users were skeptical of the effectiveness of the class with Nicky-__fitness commenting:
‘Oh dear, great for instagram, not great for results 🤷🏼♂️’ and another commenting ‘Can’t we just go raving instead 😎😂🤷🏾♂️’
Feliciabgoodenergyfitness made her take very clear simply commenting ‘No.”
The posts have even reached British audiences who are now demanding the class be brought to the UK with alex.laine_ commenting ‘omg bring this over to London ASAP🔥’ and another adding ‘always in dubai 😂 pls bring to the UK!’
Rory McEntee, Chief Marketing Officer at GymNation, said:
“What goes on inside those four walls is something we’re deliberately not going to over-explain – because the whole point is that you have to experience it. It is, genuinely, the best workout you’ve never seen.
Since launching the class we’ve even seen Londoners calling for the class to be brought to the UK, hopefully there’s a collab with London’s very own Dans Le Noir on the horizon.”
Class Dans le Noir will be running across the UAE, KSA and Bahrain at select GymNation locations with limited capacity per session.
