Defected Records Founder Simon Dunmore collaborates with UK music culture artist Mark Vessy distilling 40 years of influence in new artwork.
Simon Dunmore is a certified and officially stamped icon and ambassador of UK Dance Music. An outstanding entrepreneur and modern music influencer, through his visionary A&R he has helped establish the careers of many of world’s best known dance music artists.
He now distils four decades of musical influences in a limited edition artwork in collaboration with British photographic artist Mark Vessey to be launched at The Enter Gallery (Brighton) on May 25th. Best-known for exploring and celebrating icons of pop culture, he lovingly curates, the subjects of his images which include magazines, books and vinyl records that have had special significance within the popular cultural heritage of the 20th and 21st Centuries.
This new print and photograph follows on from his critically acclaimed work with Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim continuing his DJ and vinyl music theme.
Starting his Dance Music label Defected Records in 1999 and establishing it from an independent start up to a now formidable and highly influential global force. Simon was also the creator of Glitterbox, the polysexual and maximum glamour clubbing brand and record label, that is trailblazing high energy disco events across the world.
Known for living and breathing House music, he has signed and developed some of the industry biggest names from Roger Sanchez, Bob Sinclar, Martin Solveig, CamelPhat & Elderbrook, Kings of Tomorrow, Tensnake, MK, Dennis Ferrer and many many others.
Here in this single image Simons displays some very personal moments across his musical career all drawn from his own collection, influences that span decades of different youth culture flavors from early two tone, mod, jazz, funk and soul to seminal House and Iconic 80s pop artists. All carefully brought together for maximum impact in a striking visual format. This is Simon Dunmore celebrating the most impactful songs that motivated and moved him, a creative collection that helped shaped his tastes and ultimately his influence.
Mark Vessey has previously created photographic works that showcase collections of dance music subgenres including House Music, Funk ‘n’ Soul as well as collections inspired by Bowie and Kate Moss. He has also documented past covers of physical print magazines that we adore including Dazed & Confused, Mixmag, I-D and NME, covering music culture in an impactful and unique way, evoking the nostalgic emotions we have for different mediums. He has established himself on the artistic stage as an incisive celebrant and masterful documenter of popular culture.
