Don’t pay the ‘Vegan Tax’ this January

With January under way, many consumers are looking to make the switch to more eco-friendly and vegan products, with Google searches for ‘Veganuary’ rocketing by +900% in the last three weeks alone.

While Veganuary has a large focus on food and drink and cutting back on consuming meat, there’s also another side to it where consumers look to their clothing and homeware too, to see if any swaps can be made.

Unfortunately, this can often lead to shoppers being lumped with a ‘vegan tax’, where prices of products go up simply because they are vegan-friendly and made with more sustainable materials.

Reports have found that vegan products are around 26% more expensive on average and food can cost as much as 180% more.* Eating out also proves to be pricey for plant-based diets, with further reports stating that dining out can cost 65% more for vegans.**

With the cost-of-living crisis impacting our lifestyles and consumer spending habits, taking part in Veganuary may feel unachievable, yet there are exceptions to the unfortunate ‘vegan tax’.

Sleep expert at Snug, Sally Bonser, explains how sleeping sustainably this January doesn’t need to cost the earth.

“In January, a lot of us look to make a positive start to the New Year with resolutions made, perhaps around Veganuary or simply looking to make more eco-conscious choices when it comes to shopping.

“Sadly, the cost of being eco-friendly, or plant-based, can put consumers off as the price can often be higher. We want to reassure shoppers by reminding them that opting for vegan-friendly products needn’t be an expensive ask.

“Snug is an entirely vegan-friendly and sustainable bedding brand that offers affordable and eco-friendly comfort, all night long. Snug products are all made sustainably using recyclable and reusable materials and are filled with soft and fluffy eco fibres that were, once upon a time, plastic bottles. All Snug packaging is proudly made with 30% recycled content, and better still, it’s 100% recyclable.

“All of our products are vegan-friendly, from our pillows and duvets to our ultra-cosy pet bed range, too. Participating in Veganuary shouldn’t make life more expensive, which is why we’re really proud to be able to offer consumers a cosy night’s rest that doesn’t cost the earth.”
