Eight primary schools from The Pioneer Academy Trust join together to mark Remembrance Day
Year 6 head pupils from eight primary schools, all part of The Pioneer Academy Trust, all came together at South Norwood Primary School in Croydon on Friday 10 November to take part in a two minute silence and a memorial service ahead of Remembrance Day.
Pupils from Red Hill Primary School, Burnt Oak Junior School, Broadmead Primary School, The Crescent Primary School, Woodcote Primary School, Edenbridge Primary School and Belvedere Junior School joined South Norwood Primary School for their service.
Pupils from each school read a poem which they had either written themselves or specially selected for the occasion. All children in year six then learnt about WWII together in one class.
The memorial service is an annual event hosted by South Norwood Primary at their war memorial, which is dedicated to ‘the old boys and masters of the South Norwood School’ who fell in the great war of 1914-1918.
Pupils laid wreaths, including a wreath handmade by children in Reception.
Melody Berthoud, Headteacher at South Norwood Primary School, said: “Hosting our annual Remembrance event at South Norwood’s war memorial is always a moving occasion.
“It’s so important to come together as a community to show our respect and we are proud of how thoughtful and reflective all our pupils were.”
James Looker, Deputy Head at South Norwood Primary School, said: “It was a lovely experience for all the children to come together and take part in a respectful 2 minute silence to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us.”
One pupil from Red Hill Primary School said: “It was really moving listening to all the poems and knowing why we were there.”
