The ‘Where Greatness is Made’ campaign aims to promote mutual respect on and off the pitch and inspire the next generation of footballers, as part of the ongoing Mutual Respect partnership. The plaques will serve as a permanent reminder of the players’ inspirational stories and the importance of mutual respect for all.

Ahead of the tournament, the ‘Where Greatness is Made’ campaign honoured former prominent England women’s captains by erecting plaques in their hometowns – including the first ever official England women’s captain, Sheila Parker MBE, and her successors, including Carol Thomas MBE, Gillian Coultard MBE, Mary Phillip and Faye White.

Each plaque included a QR code that links through to an interactive map and website https://www.nationwide-signyoursupport.co.uk which features the stories of each of the former captains showcasing where their greatness was made.

Head of Advertising & Media at Nationwide Building Society, Paul Hibbs commented: “We’re honoured to partner with the England women’s team and are delighted to be celebrating their amazing victory, hard work and dedication. Everyone here is so incredibly proud of their achievement and we’re happy to be able to celebrate this amazing team, and all the trailblazers before them.

“These players will be an inspiration to future generations of footballers and to society in general. The comradery, respect and togetherness within the whole squad is clear to see and they have done the whole nation proud. At Nationwide, mutual respect has always been a core value to us, and it’s clear to see in bucket loads in this squad.”

Marzena Bogdanowicz, Head of Marketing and Communications, Women’s Football at The FA, added: “I think I can speak for the whole nation when we say we’re incredibly proud of what the team have achieved. They’re truly an inspiration to not only those in the sport, but far and wide too.

“Because of the team’s success this summer many young footballers will be inspired to pick up a ball for the first time, get involved in their local club, or begin a lifelong relationship with the game as a fan.

“It’s great to see Nationwide Building Society celebrating the 23 players involved and with many plaques at the player’s first ever clubs. It’s a great demonstration of the important role that grassroots football plays in shaping the future of the professional game.”
