Father’s Day 2023: How to say ‘father’ in languages across the world
It’s time to mark your calendars as Father’s Day is fast approaching on Sunday 18th June.
A fun fact about Father’s Day is that this annual event is generally celebrated worldwide. So the team at Preply have outlined the different translations for Father in 10 different languages across the world.
Spanish: Padre (‘Paa-drey’)
You may have heard this one before the Spanish translation for father is ‘padre’, pronounced ‘paa-drey’.
Padre can be used interchangeably with ‘papá’; however, the use of papa tends to be more common in Latin America as opposed to Spain.
French: Père (‘P-EH-r-eh’)
The pronunciation of ‘père’ requires the explicit sounding out of its syllables, with emphasis on the ‘eh’.
Traditionally speaking, ‘père’ is the old-fashioned way of referring to your dad in French, and nowadays many French people just call their dads ‘papa’.
German: Vater (‘Fa-ter’)
Like French, ‘vater’ is the old German way of addressing your father, and now the most common way is (der) ‘papa’.
When it comes to the pronunciation of ‘vater’, the ‘v’ must be dropped for an ‘f’, with the pronunciation being ‘Fa-ter’.
Japanese: 父 (‘Chi-chi’) / お父さん (‘O-to-san’)
In Japan, there are two variations of the use of father.
When addressing one’s father directly, people say ‘o-to-san’, while ‘chi-chi’ refers to one’s father when talking to someone else.
Chinese: 爸爸 (‘Ba-ba’)
There are also variations for father in Chinese, but the most common way to refer to your dad is ‘ba-ba’ or ‘ba’.
Alternatively, another way of saying father is in Chinese 父 (‘fu’).
Irish (Gaelic): Athair (‘Ah-her’)
The Irish translation of father is ‘athair’, pronounced ‘ah-her’.
However, people do tend to say ‘da’, which is Irish slang for father.
Croatian: Otac (‘O-tatz’)
Travelling to the beautiful Adriatic Sea, the Croatian translation for father is ‘otac’, pronounced ‘o-tatz”.
In a non-familial way, another variation of father in the language is “osnivač” (“os-ni-vatch”), which means founder or originator.
Greek: πατέρας (‘Pa-tear-as’)
On the Greek Islands, there are two ways of referring to your father.
The longer and traditional way is “pa-tear-as”, but many just tend to say “pa-tear”.
Hindi: पिता (‘Pi-ta’)
In Hindi, father translates to पिता, which is pronounced as ‘pi-ta’.
Other ways of saying father include बाप (‘bap’) and पूर्वज (‘poor-vaj’).
Arabic أَبُو (‘ab-u’) / أَب (‘ab’)
The traditional name for father in Arabic is either أَبُو (‘ab-u’) or أَب (‘ab’).
‘Baba’ (‘ بابا’ ) can be used as well as a term of endearment and is derived from Persian.
