Former Conservative MP Neil Parish is attempting a ‘political comeback’ as he is set to return to politics
FORMER Conservative MP Neil Parish, who resigned four months ago after being caught watching adult content in the House of Commons, is considering a return to politics and also launching a podcast focused on the environmental topics.
Speaking to GB News he said: “I think the shock has subsided and I’m sort of getting on with life. I’ve got a life back on the farm, which I’ve always been jealous to keep. And I’m sort of concentrating on that.
“You reflect on life, don’t you? When you hit a brick wall so hard. And what I’m doing is thinking ‘what have I got that I can offer the country’? What can I do to actually say to people, I’ve got some ideas that I’ve had all my life that I want to further.
“And so this is the idea of the podcast, this is the idea of looking at food farming, looking at also making sure we’re producing enough food, but also getting food out to the poorest in society, where we really are going to have to do some good. I’m looking forward really to using my expertise over the years. I hope to do some real good because we do need to have greater food security. Cost of living is a huge problem and energy and food are very expensive. And let’s really do something about it genuinely, and that’s what I’m doing.
“And then my political career one way or the other. I will take a decision as we move towards the general election.”
Discussing his resignation, which saw him leave his seat as the Conservative MP for Tiverton and Honiton in Devon in May, Mr Parish said: “I think it was a right decision. It was one that I took with my family and with my wife. And she has stood by me through my whole political career and helped me. And so it was very much a joint decision. You make a mistake, you fess up, and you take the consequences.
“I think what is difficult in political life, sometimes I think when you do come clean, and tell the truth, quite rightly, it’s quite difficult then to rehabilitate yourself. But I think I am going to try, and I still think there’s a lot of good in me.
“I did actually have, although I say so myself, a pretty good political career. And I worked very hard not only in Parliament, but also for my constituents, and especially the environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee, which I think I will be considered as a very good chair.”
Parish plans to launch a podcast focusing on farming and agricultural issues. He explained: “I don’t want it to be sort of like me just sort of pontificating on life. And so therefore, it will be interviewing others, that are producing good food, those that are actually going into public procurement, and delivering local food into our hospitals and schools. Also, looking at that charities who are delivering food to those that most need it in the country. So I think, you know, it’s a combination, not just a monologue from my good self.
“I could, you know I’m a true politician, I could pontificate every morning, but I’m not sure everybody in the world would want to listen to me here being pontificating. So, it’s highlighting the people that I know, the people that I know are doing good and highlighting that.
“Land is a finite resource, and we’re asking it to do so much and she has to feed us. We’re asking to plant more trees. And we asked it to produce energy with solar farms. So let’s prioritise food and make sure we use a more marginal land for environment and also for solar panels on roofs and less on fields.”
