free Tokyo-inspired listening bar nights at Spiritland with Nina Yamada & Toshio Matsuura

On 3rd and 10th June, Spiritland King’s Cross will host the first two editions of Toki-O Nights, a new series inspired by Japan’s kissaten listening-bar culture and the growing appetite for more intentional, hi-fi-led nights out in London. Both events are free to attend and centre on the idea of slower, more immersive social listening, with Technics providing the sound set-up and Toki Japanese Highballs (the traditional drink served in Tokyo listening bars) served across the evening.

The first night, on 3 June from 7–11 pm, features Nina Yamada, the Kamakura-born, London-based founder of Jazzy Sport London, whose sets move between deep house, Afrobeat, jazz, Latin and reggae, shaped by a lifelong connection to vinyl and a perspective that bridges Japanese and London music culture.

The second, on 10 June from 7.30–10.30 pm, welcomes Toshio Matsuura, a founding member of United Future Organisation, the collective widely credited with helping establish Japanese club culture in the 1990s. Since then, he has built an international solo career spanning clubs, festivals, remixes for artists including James Brown and Gotan Project, his jazz project HEX, and more recently the Toshio Matsuura Group, released via Brownswood Recordings.

The wider series is rooted in the traditions of Tokyo listening bars, where music, atmosphere and the Japanese Highball sit at the centre of the night. Across the Spiritland dates, guests will also have the chance to win complimentary Toki Highballs and Technics prizes.

The evening is free to attend and no need to rsvp, but we would recommend booking a table directly on the Spiritland website here: https://spiritland.com/reservations/
