GMB call on TfL for clarity on insurance cover for private hire drivers working as couriers

GMB CALL ON TFL TO CLARIFY WHETHER PRIVATE HIRE DRIVERS INSURANCE POLICIES COVER THEM TO ACT AS COURIERS

Requests for clarity are important and save the taxpayer from cases that can be brought against the regulator when things go wrong, says GMB London

GMB have called on Transport for London to give clarity over whether private hire drivers insurance policies cover them to act as couriers. This follows requests by Plan Insurance Brokers for advice on the matter.

GMB and Plan have both asked TfL if they are happy to consent to PHVs and taxis being used as courier vehicles as part of their licensing conditions. This follows the launch of new app-based services for arranging a courier service using London Taxi’s.

Clarity and consent from TfL is important for drivers to avoid being incorrectly insured. All private hire insurance policies carry a clause on adhering to local licensing authority’s conditions in regards to the conveyance of passengers or goods for public hire. Taxi drivers without insurance should take a look online to get the best taxi insurance quotes to ensure they are properly covered for all eventualities.

Many weeks have passed without any response from TfL on this matter which will affect driver and public alike.

Steve Garelick, GMB Regional Organiser said:

“Driver and Public safety is one of the main reasons licencing authorities exist.

“Understandably, with new apps being all the rage operators are keen to make profit without too much concern for the effects they have upon others.

“Requests for clarity are important and save the taxpayer from cases that can be brought against the regulator when things go wrong.

“Ultimately the driver will pay if they are found to be uninsured in an incident and members of the public will have less protection.

“GMB are at the forefront of seeking assurances from TfL for everyone’s sake, we are disappointed we still have no clarity.”
