Going out with a bang! Pet expert explains how to look after your pets this firework-filled 4th July
This Sunday is Independence Day in the United States so expect barbeques, celebrations and, in true American style, fireworks.
As much as many love a dramatic display of fireworks, there are some that dislike them a lot… Our pets.
Ali from Rebarkable and her dog IndieSpeaking on the problems firework displays can create for pets and how to combat them, Ali Smith, puppy expert and founder of Rebarkable, a puppy training company, gave us her top tips.
She said: “Desensitizing and counter-conditioning firework noises will help your puppy become happy and confident at these times and accept them as a part of life. This is what socialization is about.
“To do this, I’d recommend engaging in a play session with your pup and gently putting firework noises on in the background.
“Play, create confidence and happiness and you’re going to begin to associate those noises with play time.”
Whilst it may seem pretty obvious, she added: “A dog stressed out from fireworks is not one you want to leave in your home unattended.
“A stressed dog is unpredictable, so stay home, relax and enjoy your pup’s company!”
Whilst the adrenaline boom from fireworks is something humans enjoy, the sound is often what causes the most fear for our dogs. To combat this, Ali recommends closing the curtains to dampen the sound and flashes of light and covering their crate to make them feel safe,
She said: “Soft surfaces will help dampen the sound. The more of those you can create, the easier this will be for your puppy. The booms become less scary and intense for your pup”.
After moving from Essex last September, Ali now lives in Maryland, USA, with her husband and three dogs, Shelby, Indie and Lucy.
She said: “This is my first 4th July in the US! The dogs have bandanas, we’re having a bit of a party during the day and doing hamburgers, hotdogs and s’mores (talk about embracing American culture!) and having a campfire out in the garden.
“Our neighbours are doing fireworks, so we’re prepping the dogs really well. And in all? I think we’re going to have a lot of fun!”
