Green Career Awareness Week: Meet the company taking the eBike market by storm

Green Careers Week (7-12 November) is coming to an end, but the importance placed on promoting careers that help protect and restore the planet is still relevant. A recent report from the Learning & Work Institute and WorldSkills UK found that over half (55%) of young people that want to build careers to combat climate change and other environmental issues feel that there is a general lack of knowledge and understanding about what skills businesses in the green sector need.

Particularly, in light of COP27 this week, there is a huge focus on sustainability-led businesses. As such, London-based tech start-up Swytch Technology, has witnessed rapid growth in their customer base following the launch of the lightest and smallest eBike conversion kit in the world – the Swytch kit. Serving as testament to their innovation, Swytch’s market penetration is set to hit more than 10% of the UK eBike market, by volume, in 2022. Such is the popularity of the brand in Britain, that the company estimated that 1 in 14 eBikes on the road in the UK in 2021 were Swytch bikes.

Close to 16 million Brits now partake in cycling – the highest level ever recorded in the last five years, according to recent research from Mintel. Projections showed the value of the UK bicycle market rose by around 44% to reach nearly £1.2 billion in 2020, up from £825 million in 2019. Bike conversion specialists, Swytch, have commissioned data that reveals saving on commuting costs as one of the main reasons why Brits are currently considering purchasing an eBike, a burgeoning price that currently stands at an average of £8,000 per annum across the nation.

This is reflected in the rapid growth of the UK eBike market over the last few years. According to the latest annual figures by Mintel, the UK eBike market is worth £280 million in sales and is expected to triple over the next three years. Comparing to other competitors in the Electric Vehicle (EV) market, revenue in the E-Scooter sector is only projected to reach £43.53m in 2022. Highlighting Swytch’s impressive recent growth, with the company selling 15,700 units worldwide, 9,000 of them being in the UK – representing a one-in-fourteen share of the domestic market.
