BUSINESS professionals from across the Borough of Ealing attended the Year 11 Careers Fair organised by advisers from the Connexions Ealing Employment Engagement team.
At this key stage in the students’ academic career, being able to speak to experts in their field proved invaluable for the teenagers. Supporting the Careers Fair was Shaan Patel, Specsavers Greenford’s ophthalmic director and optometrist Sarrah Mustafa, a former pupil at Greenford High School.
Shaan says: ‘It was a pleasure to meet the students, answer their questions and discuss career options at Specsavers, including the apprenticeship programme.
‘With so many career possibilities on offer these days, I am sure it can be quite overwhelming when selecting subjects for A-level. There was a real buzz at the Careers Fair and a vibrant atmosphere, so I am sure the students gained a lot of insight into a variety of professions to equip them with more knowledge moving forward with their studies.’
The Careers Fair was attended by business people from a host of sectors, including engineering, finance, healthcare, legal and construction. Deciding which subjects to continue into A-level is important in the post-16 options, so meeting with representatives from a diverse professional background provided insight into different career pathways.
As an organisation, Specsavers invests in staff development, encouraging them to further their qualifications and progress their careers within the group. Students who prefer a more blended style of learning can apply for an apprenticeship, which combines formal study with on-the-job training.
The Specsavers Career Pathway offers staff the opportunity to study for industry-recognised qualifications which encompass a wide variety of roles, including customer services, optician, dispensing optician, optical assistant, audiologist, audiology assistant and laboratory technicians.
