This summer, Brixton House presents its groundbreaking annual Housemates Festival 2023 following the success of its inaugural 2022 festival, which saw the development of Corey Bovell’s popular hit Chicken Burgers N Chips, Shakira Newton’s Things I Can Laugh About Now and Sonny Nwachukwu’s Saturn’s Returns, all BBTA award nominated.

Housemates Festival 2023 invites visitors back to the theatre for an exciting three week journey to uncover the unheard stories of a generation whose understanding of Britain is shaped by 90s culture and the turn of the millennium. Get ready for an unforgettable experience in art, theatre and music set in a unique and playful atmosphere. A variety of thought-provoking themes will explore the complexities of youth crime and rehabilitation in Toby Clarke’s REP juxtaposed with the Black joy of growing up in South London in DK Fashola’s Is Dat U Yh?; a look at the inner voice of a Black male experience in Tobi King Bakare’s Before I Go and intergenerational conversations on radical activism in Daniel Ward’s Everything I Own; the transition from boy to man and the search for connection in Lyndon Chapman’s IsThe WiFI Good In Hell; the complexities of love, family, relationships and the perspectives of queerness in Em Thane, Megs Kumari and Toni Roberts’ Same, Same, But Different; Latinx theatre makers include Pepa Duarte’s Eating Myself which focuses on the powerful conversation about womanhood, body image and tradition and Marisol Spensieri’s USELESS probes the big life questions about how we all survive in a capitalist world.
