This summer, learn about the history and science behind terrariums, and get hands on by creating your own, with a Terrarium Workshop at the Natural History Museum.
Run by London Terrariums, the workshop will take place in the Museum’s Garden Meeting Room, nestled in the heart of its gardens and beneath the watchful gaze of Fern the Diplodocus.
The self-sustaining miniature ecosystems encased in glass vessels have long enchanted and bought verdant joy to their owners. Now, guests can get to grips with their lore and create their own tiny plant world to take home. One of the Museum’s botanists will discuss all things flora, flowers and biodiversity with guests, before London Terrarium expertly guide you through building a tiny, encapsulated garden of your own.
London Terrarium’s mission is to bring a little green corner of green to everyone’s homes, whether you have access to a garden or not, and since 2014, they’ve planted more than 10,000 terrariums. So, whether you’re green-fingered or a beginner, these glass planters are very low maintenance and will be happy in any home!

The Evolution Garden tells the story of 2.7 billion years of history through our planet, through an immersive timeline of plants, rocks of different geological periods from across the UK, and gleaming representations of reptiles, birds and mammals.
Over in the Nature Discovery Garden, find out more about the wildlife on our doorsteps today, from a wildflower meadow to the pond where frogs, newts, dragonflies and mandarin ducks make themselves at home.
For the Terrarium Workshop, guests can bring their own glass vessel as long it is no bigger than 20 centimetres by 20 centimetres. Or select to book a ticket with the £10 glass vessel included, to then collect and use at the workshop. Tickets are available from the Natural History Museum website and start from £55, or £49.50 for members.
All other materials, tools, plants and after-care instructions are included in your ticket. All skill levels and ages are welcome at the workshop, although content is best suited to those aged 16 years+.
