International Stress Awareness Week: London students are more stressed than their UK peers

With International Stress Awareness Week well underway week from 7-11 November, it’s crucial to shine a light on the stress students experience and how to manage it. As mock exams for the cohort of students who are set to write their GCSEs this summer are set to start, it’s vital they have strategies to cope and manage their stress. The notoriously strictly marked practice tests can produce a nail-biting or nerve-racking experience for students moving far beyond manageable, with new data by MyTutor unveiling that 42% of parents say their child has the highest levels of stress they have observed in their lifetime.

Even more, students in London have reportedly higher levels of stress than their peers throughout the UK yet are receiving higher grades. A new poll from commissioned by the Early Intervention Foundation (EIF) found that more than two thirds of London teachers reported increased stress among secondary school pupils over the last two months, at a higher rate than other parts of the country. Fuelling this stress in the capital may be the higher average attainment levels, pressure from parents, and students feeling the brunt of the cost-of-living crisis, directly impacting their schools.

Key Stats:
43% agree their child’s self-esteem is linked to the grades they achieved at school and university
59% agree that since COVID-19, their child has fallen out of a routine with regards to their education and their motivation to work has declined
68% agree that their child benefits from one-to-one learning environments, alongside the classroom experience
47% of students said they enjoy learning from a Tutor they can relate to (age, interests, personal experiences, communication styles, etc.)
49% of students said they learn better from people who share a similar life experience to them

In light of these findings, MyTutor has lunched free online courses for all students to dissipate feelings of stress and inturn, help your child regain their self-esteem, raise their hand during lessons, and boost their confidence in the classroom.
