Interview with travel photographer Nicholas Tinelli

Travel and portrait photographer Nicholas Tinelli, based in Buenos Aires, talks about his passion and work as a professional image artist.

Inspired by color, he specializes in private photo sessions, but is also available as a guide and photography instructor, to discover the argentine capital through the eye of a local.

What was your first contact with travel photography?

I combined my passion for travel and photography during a journey in green Ireland. Since this experience I have never stopped my creative research as a photographer.

Along the way I was also very inspired by the work of other photographers, such as Steve McCurry, a great master.

What aspect of travel photography do you specialize in?

Although I like everything about travel photography, I’m particularly interested in portraits.

It’s a very broad and challenging area of photography, difficult to dominate. Getting a great portrait gives me enormous satisfaction and each of these shots I bring back home is unique, connected to a precious memory, to a person I met on a journey.

Color or black & white?

Although I like black and white very much and it looks good with almost any kind of photography, I am particularly inspired by color. For me it is a form of expressing positivity to the observer, energy, life. I think that’s what the journey also conveys to us.

What other activities do you organize?

In Buenos Aires and Argentina in general, apart from running photography courses for enthusiasts of any level, I organize photographic journeys, unique experiences in contact with local people and the wild nature of Argentina.

Since years I’m also working with Brand Photography, helping individuals and companies to stand out from the crowd, improving their business with professional images.

As a local photographer, what is the place you most recommend to visit in Buenos Aires?

I definitely suggest to visit to the CCK (Kirchner Cultural Center), once the seat of the post office and now a unique modern space in Buenos Aires and whole South America, where art exhibitions and concerts take place. A must for photographers!

I know you write a photography blog, how does it differ from the amount of blogs on the web today?

A blog is like a personal diary, somehow, everyone is unique. Sometimes in the amount of material available online there is also a lot of garbage, poor quality material used only for Google ranking purposes. That’s why I try to take care of the content and offer the reader a valuable contribution, mainly focused on travel and portrait photography.

What does working as a freelance photographer mean to you these days?

Photography is a great passion, but once it becomes your work as well, complications arise. There is a lot of competition and it’s a job closely related to technology, things change fast and you never stop learning.

At first the earnings and visibility are limited, but if it is really the passion that drives you forward, then with study and dedication nothing can stop you.
