Islamic Relief UK and Sufra NW London deliver food packs to Brent’s vulnerable communities this Qurbani

The charity Islamic Relief UK will be working with its local partner, Sufra NW London, during the religious festival of Qurbani this month to deliver food packs to vulnerable families and individuals affected by the country’s worsening cost-of-living crisis. Together they will deliver 200 food parcels to the community on the 28th June.

People throughout the country are struggling with cost-of-living crisis and Brent is no exception. According to polling done by Islamic Relief and Savanta, 30% of brits are worried that they’ll have to rely on a food bank in the near future, with around half saying that they struggle more now to pay bills and afford food than they did a year ago.

The Islamic month of Qurbani is traditionally a time when people would donate meat to the poor to help them provide food for their families. Muslims across the world and the UK still adhere to this charitable tradition and now Islamic Relief and Sufra NW London use this time to help those in the country who are struggling with rising food costs.

This year, Islamic Relief is working with 32 partners throughout the UK, in cities such as London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Leicester, Burnley, Cambridge, Glasgow, Exeter and more, and will be working with local charities, food banks, and football clubs to deliver for those who need it most.

Tufail Hussain, director, Islamic Relief UK comments, “The month of Qurbani is a special time on the calendar for British Muslims and reminds us of our commitment to those less fortunate than us. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for us to follow through on these commitments and deliver to any and all communities who need assistance as they struggle with trying times. Each year we donate food at Qurbani, we find ourselves having to give more and more, as the need has just exponentially worsened over the years. The cost-of-living crisis has affected us all, but those of us who still can, should give to help those who have been hit even more acutely by this blight on society.”

Fahim Dahya, Facilities and Logistics Manager, Sufra NW London comments, “By distributing food parcels, we can support our neighbours, such as the single mother who’s just lost her job, the asylum seeker who’s facing homelessness, or the pensioner who’s using up his last savings on heating bills. Fighting against poverty, for our community.”
