Islamic Relief UK’s parliamentary Eid reception honours the British Muslim community’s significant generosity following a year of unprecedented emergencies

On Wednesday 17 May, Islamic Relief UK held a Parliamentary Eid Reception in Westminster to celebrate the incredible generosity of the British Muslim community and the critical life-saving work of the charity.

The event was hosted by Afzal Khan MP and speakers included Shadow Foreign Secretary the Rt Hon David Lammy MP and Islamic Relief UK’s Director Tufail Hussain.

It marked the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, and the end of the holy month of Ramadan when the Muslim community abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset and donate millions to help those less fortunate.

Supporters, civil society, civil servants, faith leaders, UK partners, staff, and Parliamentarians came together at the reception to honour the incredible generosity of the Muslim community.

The last twelve months have seen unprecedented disasters across the world and the British Muslim community has raised significant sums to help Islamic Relief respond to emergencies such as floods in Pakistan and a massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

The Rt Hon David Lammy MP said: “Islamic Relief represents a charity that — despite the hardships and the pandemic — has seen Muslim people giving more. This is incredibly humbling.

“I come here in solidarity. Hoping that for other generations, we alleviate some of the suffering that we see across the world at this time.”

MP Afzal Khan said: “It’s good to see the work of Islamic Relief globally, their projects have touched my heart. Faith-based charities do phenomenal work and I wish them well.”
