Kumori, an exciting new hand roll concept in Soho with a music focus

Hand roll bars are currently making a splash across London with Temaki Mayfair finally opening, Maki & Ramen taking over the iconic La Bodega Negra spot in Soho, Miokuru opening next month and Maki Nori last month! The rolls are rollin’!

This April, the modern Japanese hand-roll focused restaurant opened in the heart of London’s West End using only the highest grade seafood.

This is the first permanent flagship in Soho, located on Denman Street—one of London’s most energetic and culturally dense streets—following pop-ups last year (and this year) at the Monaco F1 and a residency at How Matcha Marylebone.

The site is intentionally compact, upbeat, and energetic, designed to feel alive from the street and buzzing throughout service.

The 30-seater Soho represents the culmination of three years of global research, events, and brand experimentation for the team behind Kumori, translating a dining format that originated in Japan into a current London expression.

The Head Chef is Chef Alvin Contawe, who brings over 15 years of experience in Japanese cuisine, having trained and worked primarily at Dinings, with a further stint at Roka and Luna Omakase. He combines discipline with a contemporary sensibility to create refined, expressive dishes rooted in tradition yet feeling distinctly fresh.
Hand rolls take centre stage alongside new style sashimis, miso, small plates and signature hand rolls including: Spicy Tuna, Unagi Foie Gras, Burnt’ Salmon, Baked Crab, Toro with torched bone marrow and Aubergine as the vegetarian option. Emphasis is placed on texture and balance.
The menu is made to order, in front of the customers and served immediately rather than plated, directly into the guest’s hand -created to be eaten on the spot. The result is warm rice, slightly cool fish and ultra-crispy nori. Kumori’s offering balances classic combinations with indulgent signatures, it is not to be missed.
