La Maritxu, the three strong London cafe collection and online shop is a celebration of the Basque country’s most iconic dish: cheesecake! Created by husband and wife team Lucia and Ignacio in 2021, La Maritxu has gone from strength to strength. The recent opening of their third cafe and store in Greenwich, with further openings planned for 2026, is testimony to the excellence and popularity of their infamous product.
Having previously worked as an architect, Lucia has since turned her eye for design to cheesecakes creating authentic bakes that have secured La Maritxu a stream of loyal followers and dedicated fans.
Now with a central kitchen in Bethnal Green, the La Maritxu ‘engine room’ sees over 300 cheesecakes baked daily, and delivered to all three stores and to wholesale clients and individuals alike. Made using a trio of the finest core ingredients (cream cheese, double cream, sugar and eggs) the cheesecakes are baked in the traditional style which is known for its light and airy finish and caramelised top. At La Maritxu, this icon of Bilbao is further improved thanks to using Lucia’s family recipe which has been passed down over generations and enjoyed for decades. Most importantly, Lucia’s secret ingredient is love – of Basque origin herself, authentic cheesecake has been a synonymous part of her life and has set the benchmark for creating nothing but the best.
Available across all of their stores and to buy online either by the slice, or as a mini or large version, the classic cheesecake is a mainstay all year around. However, never one to standstill Lucia is always keen to innovate their offering as demonstrated through their recent best-selling limited edition Tiramisu Cheesecake as well as their Freeze Dried Raspberry topped Chocolate Cheesecake being a new addition for Valentine’s Day, and beyond. Looking ahead further into the year, Lucia and Ignacio are already working on future flavours, with rumours of pistachio and even a new flavour cheese being incorporated in due course.
